The first review is here, Chapter 1 is here, Chapter 2 is here, Chapters 3, 4, and 5 are here, and [...] ... ( more)

This week I entered 5 carnivals and a festival, and was fortunate enough to be chosen as an editor’s pick in two of them, raising my year’s total to 23. Thanks to all the hosts who put the carnivals and festival together! I know from experience it is a lot of work to [...] ... ( more)

Another side effect of being in considerable debt is that you may have a lack of available funds to make the frugal choice vs the cheap choice. I talk a lot about being frugal vs being cheap, and how I work out the difference for myself. A core tenet of frugality, to me, [...] ... ( more)

Since the economic stimulus checks started going out via direct deposit and now also paper check, I have had a lot of questions from people who thought they would receive their check already based on the IRS published schedule, but have not. I did some digging on the IRS website to try and find [...] ... ( more)

Last month I signed up for Revolution Money Exchange, a service similar to paypal for person to person financial transactions but without the fees paypal charges. Since then, I have used the service several times, and honestly, I have had mixed results with it. At this point, I think it shows promise, but [...] ... ( more)

On Monday I wrote my treatise on why I find value in having an emergency fund even while still in debt. Mathematically, there is a sacrifice in interest earned on savings vs interest saved by using that to pay down debt, but I feel the benefits are more than financial. The responses to [...] ... A few weeks ago, I made the decision to, for a short time, change our financial focus from primarily debt reduction to a mix of debt reduction and saving. Until our emergency fund is at $2000, all my snowflakes will be split evenly between our emergency fund account and our student loan payoff fund. [...] ... ( more)

On Saturday I went grocery shopping, and as I posted about earlier, I found an amazing deal on energy bars that my spouse eats (they were being clearanced) and bought all the store had of them. All told, I spent about $50 on them, and have certainly busted the grocery budget for this month. [...] ... ( more)

A week or two ago, I read a post on My Good Cents about ArtsCow.com offering 400 free photo prints (200 4×6s and 200 5×7s) to new customers. I had never heard of ArtsCow so I checked it out, and signed up. I did get credits for 400 free prints (50 a month of each [...] ... ( more)

There are a number of different viewpoints on what an emergency fund is and what constitutes an emergency fund. While a cash emergency fund may be seen by many as the ideal, there are also arguments for emergency funds that consist of various lines of credit - from home equity to overdrafts to credit [...] ... Yes, indeed, the grocery budget is taking a beating with the ever-increasing prices on staples here. But that’s not what this post is about. Yesterday when I shopped I totally broke the grocery budget, and it wasn’t solely because of rising prices. I found a clearance sale I could not refuse and spent about $50.00 [...] ... ( more)

The nice people at SmartyPig sent me a $50 gift card to give away to my readers, so I have been doing some research into SmartyPig and what they’re about. I’m working on a review of what I think about it, and when I am done, I will publish it with a giveaway of [...] ... ( more)

Last night I decided I wanted a cake for Mother’s Day. I actually spent a portion of the night dreaming about Mother’s Day cakes. Why? I’d never had a cake on Mother’s Day before, or even thought of having one. Growing up, we’d never given my mother cakes on Mother’s Day, [...] ... ( more)

My inlaws visited us for a week recently, and while they were here, they shopped at our local Kroger quite a bit. My inlaws have lots of specific dietary needs and wants, and instead of sharing them with me so I could stock up on what they like, they chose to just go get [...] ... ( more)

The technicians are here as I type installing our new furnace. They cleaned all my ducts this morning (that was a fun project for them, I’m sure) and now the furnace is being installed. When I was a kid, I was a saver. In fact, I saved almost every penny I was given from the time I was old enough for people to give me money directly versus giving it to my parents for me. By the time I was 16 I had saved enough money to put [...] ... ( more)

So what’s a blog carnival, and why should anyone care? One of the very first ways I found other bloggers who were working their way of of debt like me was through the Carnival of Debt Reduction. A carnival is simply a collection of recent, user submitted posts, on a particular topic. The [...] ... ( more)

With the furnace purchase looming on the horizon, it is time to get all of our ducks in order and look at how last month went. Overall, it was a pretty okay month, but that was due to my increasing several sources of income more than spending less money. In fact, I spent [...] ... ( more)

I’ve spent a good portion of my adult life without anything I would call an emergency fund. Although I had saved some money in a retirement fund, I didn’t have anything to speak of in a savings account that I could easily access, and honestly, even though I thought I “should” I didn’t really [...] ...
