Last night, my wife and I attended our first Village Association meeting.
What the hell is that? Well, think, town hall meeting, but a lot less formal.
We live in a section of town that was once its own entity, but has since been absorbed into the neighboring city. The Village Association is its attempt [...] ... ( more)

In another month or so, if all goes as planned, I’ll be out of credit card debt 100% for the first time in over a decade.
The deepest I found myself was $29k in November of 2006.
At the time, I was carrying around $l7k in credit card debt (down from $26k two years earlier) and I [...] ... ( more)

It’s been a bit of a reality check for me adding my house to the assets calculation for my net worth updates.
For the longest time, I was thinking, “What housing slump?”, but now I see it first hand. Already this month, I’ve seen the value of my home drop 5-figures. Ouch.
It’s tough to get [...] ... ( more)

Recently my wife has been expressing interest in paying some of the bills.
But I’m reluctant to change my ways as I’ve been paying all of the bills from my checking account, while keeping detailed track of everything, for over a decade now.
It’s not so much that it’s a habit, it’s just that I’ve grown accustomed [...] ... ( more)

Last night while watching, um, American Gladiators on NBC, I saw a promo for a fluff-piece on the Today show about a blue man that would have aired this morning.
I’m at work when the Today show is on, but I looked the story up and it stems from a December 19th story out of Oregon:
It’s [...] ... ( more)

My biggest bill each month, like a lot of people, is my mortgage bill.
What’s funny to me, and probably me only, is that, of all of my bills, it goes back in the smallest envelope.
Biggest bill in the smallest envelope. Those who hold their mortgage with CountryWide know what I’m talking about.
Think they do [...] ... ( more)

Okay, now what?
Totally a fictitious question — I haven’t hit the contribution limits and don’t really expect to in 2008, but over the last few weeks, while crunching numbers to maximize my 401k contributions, my eyes were opened to the yearly limits placed on this type of retirement account.
Around ten years ago when Roth IRAs [...] ... ( more)

Being a Thursday and all, today was the first paycheck of the year.
And, as hoped and expected, my tax filing status moves last week increased my take home amount even when I also increased my 401k contributions at the same time.
No raise, but more money in my pocket and more money towards retirement…
Net pay [...] ... ( more)

Yep, another “end of the the year” post.
In the last few months of 2007, we actively started trying to cut down on our utility expeneses, but for
comparison’s sake for 2008, last year’s totals are to the right.
With the cost of everything seemingly going up each year, it will be interesting to see if we [...] ... ( more)

I’ve never really been a fan of posts on blogs about, well, blogging but I’m about to make one myself. Another goal of mine, that I left off of the my 2008 goals, is to increase the popularity of this site — though I guess it could loosely fall under the “increase my passive income” [...] ... ( more)

No, I didn’t win the lottery…
This month’s numbers are going to look a little funky as this is the first time I’m including my house in the numbers.
As I mentioned last month, I’ll be calculating its month-to-month value using the 2007 property assessment and the Zillow estimate with the latter holding more weight.
With that [...] ... ( more)

Being the end of the year, it’s time to start thinking about taxes…
In some ways, I’m looking very forward to February when we’ll file our taxes and get our nice big refund like we do most years but right now, I’m looking to change my filing status for 2008 on my Form W-4 so that [...] ... ( more)

Well, Christmas has come and gone and the days away from work are over now too.
I’d say it was a pretty successful Christmas this year. I think I made out better than my wife, but she may say otherwise.
Best of all, as far as I can tell, it’s 100% paid for already.
I [...] ... ( more)

So I went to throw a little bit more at my ATT Universal credit card this morning and came up with this:
If you can’t read it, it states, “You are permitted 4 online payments per billing cycle. You have already made 4 payments totalling 915.00 this billing cycle.”
I like how they call it an [...] ... ( more)

I heard about this for the first time a few weeks ago, but this week it seems to be making the rounds again on the radio and on tv (as a fluff piece).
US Surgeon General Rear Adm. Steven K. Galson, in regards to Santa’s portly stature, recently said, “It is really important that the people [...] ... ( more)

With all remaining bills for 2007 paid already, it’s time to start looking ahead to 2008. This will be my official “Goals for 2008″ posting. Earlier this month, I had a preliminary version, but as I’ve thought about it some more over the past few weeks, there were a few things I felt [...] ... ( more)

For my monthly “Net Worth” assessments, I’m toying with the idea of including the value of my home on the assets side for the first time.
In the past, I’ve left it off entirely because I never thought I was in a position to accurately estimate the value of my home. Enter Zillow.com.
I’ve played with Zillow [...] ... ( more)

Drat.
So I logged into my ING Direct account this morning to see how things are progressing…
C’mon… Big money! Big money!
$2.49 earned this month. Woo-hoo!
Okay, yeah, that’s not so great, but what I also noticed is that there was *another* interest rate change yesterday. It went from 4.121% down to [...] ... ( more)

Just when I thought I had the stock market figured out, well, yesterday happened.
When it was hinted that another rate drop was coming from the fed, there was much rejoicing and the markets went up.
When they cut the rate last month, things went up. Okay, I see a trend. Rate cuts hurt the [...] ... ( more)

A month ago, the State of Connecticut launched a plan to help the poor subprime borrowers out there. I was upset then.
Now, as I’m sure anyone reading this already knows since I’m a few days late, the Federal Government is following suit.
And yes, I’m still upset.
The lending companies gambled by lending money to people [...] ... ( more)

Yeah, it’s a little early for this, but I’m gonna do it anyway.
First and foremost, my goal for 2008 is to eliminate all credit card debt. This should be completed sometime during the summer of 2008. Done. Finis. Finished.
I’ll still use the cards, I just won’t carry a balance.
Next goal will [...] ... ( more)

Another month where the market recovered, for the most part, in the last couple days…Without the pseudo-recovery on the last day of the month, my bottom line would have decreased significantly. Even still, November of 2007 would still have gone down as another month headed in the right direction thanks to some large credit card payments.
For those of us [...] ... ( more)

Grant from the Corner Office Blog recently posed a question on my posting about picking up a nickel that someone had dropped — and that no one else had any interest in.
What are your thoughts on removing the penny (and nickel for that matter) from our financial circulation? There are some that argue we don’t [...] ... ( more)

You know me, always starting up a new idea before I finish the last one. It’s not a very good practice, but I’m on a roll.
Things are going so well with the debt payment plan that I have in place now (even though I’m only entering my second month…), I’m already looking to expand. [...] ... ( more)

As we near the end of the year, it makes it easier and easier to compare this year with last — and leaves time to make any end of the year attempts at besting last year’s numbers.
I use Microsoft Money to track my finances. Back in 1997, for unknown reasons (it probably had a [...] ... ( more)
