Giant monsoon raindrops are falling on my RV. Finally I get some rain. It rains across town, it rains across the street but it just doesn't want to rain here. I have a good feeling about this storm, I am going to get some water. In other news, I have a bite for my serger. A woman wants to see it. She is very interested but we can't seem to arrange to meet until next Sunday. She says she sews costumes for a youth theater group so it sounds like the serger would get some ... (more)

I was chatting with my Mom today about my plans to renovate my mobile home and she asked where I was getting the money for this project. Oh, um, well, I'm sort of borrowing it from your vacation fund Mom. I have $4,000 set aside to pay for a trip for my Mom. I promised to take her where ever she wanted to go once I got a real job. I've had a real job now for 8 years but something has always kept us from going on a trip. Now I have this plan to fix up my mobile ... (more)

It's summer and it's hot. 2 of the women I work with chopped their hair this summer. I've been growing my hair for a while but every once in a while I feel like cutting it off. I've done that a couple of times. But this time, since I just got a bunch of hair clips and accessories for Christmas, I decided to learn a new hair trick. I've always wanted to know how to do those rope or twisted braids. I saw a girl with them on TV this morning so I decided to look it up on the ... (more)

I decided to do it. I listed my sewing machine and serger on Craig's List. It's the end of my sewing dynasty. It wasn't much of a dynasty really. I still don't know how to sew. I had big dreams and spent over $1000 on a sewing machine, serger, embroidery machine and all of the accessories. I had a nice sewing room set up at my house. But then my goals changed and retiring early became more important than my sewing hobby. I moved to my RV and the sewing stuff sat unused and unloved. It's time to find them ... (more)

I had errands to run this morning. First the hardware store to look at bug spray options for my tenants. I opted for a spray that lasts 9 months and sticky traps for the ones that get away. Came to $20. That's all I'm gong to do. If my tenants want to sign up for $89 a quarter bug service they can. I can't see paying that when there are only bugs for 2 months out of the year. Next, over to my boss's house to add chlorine to his pool while he's away. I agreed to do it because ... (more)

I would really like some more water. The weatherman said it would rain last Sunday so I emptied my collection tanks in to the jacuzzi to make room for all that rain. I barely got anything. Now it's raining again, everywhere but here. There was a lot of lightening so I didn't turn the computer on right away. I didn't want to lose my post before I had a chance to save it. We are supposed to get more rain this weekend so I am hopeful. My homeowner's association changed management companies last month. I had just sent my 3 month ... (more)

After a month of carpooling I managed to save $40. That's a little over a dollar a day. I'm not sure that is worth the extra trouble of leaving early and staying late to match my carpooler's schedule. I guess I will try it for another month or so. Can you tell I'm not that enthused?Even though I had to buy windshield wipers and light bulbs I still managed to be $196 under budget. That means I can put an extra $100 towards my mortgage. July isn't going to be as good. My truck really needs an oil change so ... (more)

I shipped off my Ebay boxes today. I had to take time off from work to go to the post office in the middle of the morning but nobody seemed to mind too much. My rolling luggage rack worked perfectly. I'm glad I didn't have any more boxes. I only had room for 6.Total tally...8 diecast cars for sale, 7 sold for an average of $14. I guess that is an ok profit. It's not quite worth the trouble. Next time I think I will try some 'buy it now' prices and see if anyone bites. I called up my ... (more)

Too bad I don't feel like stimulating the economy any more. This check is going toward my mortgage. When I get a rent check tomorrow I can deposit them together and send another jumbo mortgage payment. Yea! That is more interesting to me than buying something new at the moment. I have been watching all the things for sale on Craig's List and I have had to decrease my target profit from selling my stuff. I'm still aiming for 2 more years until mortgage freedom. I decided that $8,000 was more realistic for my RV and $4,000 for my stuff ... (more)

My Ebay Mistakes (5 clicks)
From Frugal Freedom - view blog entries - visit this blog
June 29, 2008 at 8:47 pm ET
I had 8 diecast cars listed for my first group of Ebay auctions. 7 sold today. All were listed for $9.99 with $10 shipping. The highest bid was $15 but most sold for the listed price. I hate to see all that money wasted on shipping. I bought the cars for between $10 and $22 so I did lose a bit. My biggest mistake this time was that I forgot that I had a business account with Paypal and it charged me $1+ for each payment! That's $7 off of my profit plus Ebay fees! That's horrible. I returned my ... (more)

It's a bad habit. Just seeing all of the stuff on Craig's List makes me want it. And the prices are so good. I wish I had known about that site before I bought all of my sewing supplies. I bought my serger used for $300 and my sewing maching new for $300, both from a sewing store. I barely used them and now I want to sell them. If I'm lucky I can get $100-$150 for each. If I had bought something used off of Craig's List to begin with I wouldn't have to take such a loss now. ... (more)

I am sooo glad this week is over. It was rough at the office. I wanted to quit so badly but I looked at my mortgage amortization spreadsheet and thought, I just need to hang on for at least a year and a half more. I have been at this job for a year and a half so I know I can do it. Next week is a short week so already it is good. Since the summer rains have started I can do laundry with wild abandon, yea! That is exciting for me. I ... (more)

It's very cloudy. The monsoon rains are almost here. There were a few sprinkles this morning but not enough to fill my rainwater tanks yet. On Monday when I jumped in my car to go to work, the windshield was spotted from the sprinkles the night before. I turned on my wipers and I could see ragged rubber trailing back and forth as the wipers tried to clean. I went to the store after work and purchased 2 new wipers, came home and put them on. I know, it would have been better if ... (more)

I got the pre-stimulus letter. I was excited because I thought there might be an actual check in that envelope. Nope. Just a letter saying I should get $600 by Friday or within the next 6 weeks. 6 weeks! But I've been waiting so patiently :(When they first announced the Stimulus Deal my first thought was to save the money for emergencies. Later on, when I was still hoping for a direct deposit, I got the crazy idea that I would spend it on a laptop. How extravagant of me! But now, I have had time to think about it. ... (more)

Around 2pm today the power went out at work. I love those kind of changes in my work routine. Last summer the power went off all night so our boss let us go home. My carpool had some errands to run so off we went to the store. It was about 110 outside and getting in and out of the car at every store was brutal but it was still better than work. I made every effort to think of things that I needed while we were shopping so that I wouldn't have to come back later. I rarely ... (more)

Yesterday I completed the first preliminary steps to sell my stuff on ebay. Today I took the big leap...actually listing them. It was a big deal to me. I was very worried that I would forget to put some important information on it. I had to go back and edit one after I listed it. Good thing that was easy to do. I am a little worried that I listed them too low but I have more to list so I can increase my starting price next time. It took me a while to figure out how to save a ... (more)

I haven't actually gotten rid of anything yet. Giving things away would be much easier than selling but I am looking for a monetary reward to help me severe my attachment to my beloved stuff. I looked in my closet and picked out 8 collectibles that I could list on ebay. I bought them when I had a much higher paying job and my co-workers introduced me to Nascar. I bought the cars off of ebay in the hopes that their values would rise. I also had a plan to sell them locally at the swap meet but I couldn't ... (more)

Yes, I did it! I had serious doubts after my first attempt to upgrade my computer RAM memory resulted in a scrambled screen. The nice fellow with customer service from computer memory outlet made some suggestions, one of which was removing the current memory module and placing the new module in its place. I also learned how to find the screen that tells me how much RAM is in each slot. After replacing the module in the first slot I was thrilled to see that the computer recognised it. Then I put the module that used to be in slot ... (more)

I came home today, turned on the computer, clicked on the internet...and nothing. I looked at the modem. No internet light. Ahhh! I unhooked the modem, got out my extension cord and tested the modem outside at the pedestal. Still didn't work. Since I didn't want to use up precious daytime minutes listening to a Qwest representative say, "turn it off, turn it on, what lights are green?", I watched TV waiting until 8 pm when my nighttime minutes begin. When it was cool enough to go for a walk at about 7:30 I looked at the modem and surprise, ... (more)

I shouldn't have looked at zillow.com to see my home value. I knew it probably went down. I looked last month and it was at $175-$170K. That was ok. Today it said $160K. That is bad. At its highest it was worth $185K. I don't plan to sell now so that low number doesn't mean very much. By the time I do (or can) sell, I hope the value will have increased. I paid $131K. I am still in the black. Even adding the $30K I will have paid in mortgage interest (if I pay it off early), I am ... (more)

Last February I looked up the cost to build my little house on this building cost site. Since then I have drawn up a smaller plan because I wanted something more affordable. Today I plugged in the numbers for my little cottage plan and was stunned. The price to build has practically doubled since February! Ahh! I can't even afford to build my cottage now. It would cost as much as the bigger house did 5 months ago. Of course, I could save here and there by doing some tasks myself and being my own contractor but it is still ... (more)

Another busy week has begun. I spent all morning fixing a mistake that I made last Friday. I realized it at 10pm on Friday thus causing me to fret about it all weekend. I ended up leaving a message for customer service to cancel the order at 6am this morning just in case. I don't get to work until 8am so I didn't want my mistake to go any farther through the system. I believe I caught it in time so all that fretting was for nothing.Towards the end of the day, when things slowed down, I sneaked a peek ... (more)

My 6 month car insurance bill arrived this week. I opened it and divided by 6 months in the hope that it went down and I can add more money to my miscellaneous category. But No! It went up by $4 a month. How depressing. I remember why. Last December when I changed my home insurance to a rental policy, they took away my multi-line discount. I don't think that is fair. I still have 2 policies with State Farm. I think I should still get the discount but obviously they don't agree. They suggested I could insure something else ... (more)

104 today. I'm glad I had my RV air conditioner cleaned last April. If it went out now I would be cooking. I've experienced that before and don't want to do it again. The only way to sleep was under a wet towel. People lived here without AC for many years with adobe homes and sleeping porches. I'm just spoiled I guess. I filled up my RV water tank today. I should have 5 weeks of water left. I'm positive it will rain in the next two weeks so I am not conserving water as strictly as before. That means ... (more)
