Good Will had an article in the May 5 edition of Newsweek titled “ Questions for Obama“. One question was; “You favor eliminating the cap on earnings subject to the 12.4 percent Social Security tax, which now covers only the first $102,000. A Chicago police officer married to a Chicago public-school teacher, each with 20 years on [...] ... (more)

The New York Times continues to impress me with how they manipulate data that may otherwise just be a sea of numbers, and transform it into a beautiful chart and/or graph. Click on the image below to launch the Times’ interactive version of the chart, where you can clearly see how each item comprising [...] ... (more)

I’m started to see more articles supporting my fears regarding the conflict between BioFuel and BioFood. The tragic unintended consequences of corn based ethanol is that the cost of food, starting with the grains, corn, wheat, and rice, has increased dramatically over the past year. Here is a chart from the World Bank illustrating this [...] ... (more)

The Q1 number is out and it appears we are not yet in an official recession. This may be just as bad.  0.6% for two quarters now, and consumer sentiment at a low. I believe those shouting “depression” are a bit over the edge, but I do believe the Q1 number, which is subject to a [...] ... (more)

Most blogs you may read are starting to offer an RSS feed, a way of reading the blog through a reader. I use Feedburner and in the left sidebar offer links so you may access my blog through Google or Yahoo’s RSS feature. Few non-bloggers use this feature, and May 1st has been declared RSS [...] ... Now that you’ve Taken a Breath, and are ready to roll over an IRA you inherited, there are a few important things you must know. Enough that I’ve written my May feature article, “ Inheriting or Bequeathing an IRA” which you can read a day early. I believe the article highlights the importance of properly setting [...] ... I recently became aware of a situation that was pretty upsetting, even though it happened to someone I don’t know and never met. A friend of a friend passed away and left her brother a sum of money in a trust. The brother, disabled, and not working, panicked, and took the money out. Now, when [...] ... (more)

When I wrote about The Next Bubble two weeks ago, I didn’t mention any of the companies involved in solar power. Part of my reason for that is I am not really a stock picker, and randomly suggesting companies in the industry would do my readers no justice. Last week I saw an episode of [...] ... (more)

As a fan of Garrison Keillor’s “News from Lake Wobegone” where, “all of the children are above average,” I’m always intrigued to find some reference to an ‘average’ so off the mark it strikes me as comical. Citizens for Tax Justice (CTJ) helped me find a recent example. They quote Senators Hillary Clinton and Barrack [...] ... (more)

If you have never heard of this, it’s an ETF (exchange traded fund) which trades like a stock, and is comprised of the 100 highest dividend yielding US based stocks. There are further requirements such as the company must have had positive dividend per share growth in each of the past five years. Also, the [...] ... (more)

In the scramble for solar related plays on words, Barron’s beat me to this one. They used it in the index of this week’s issue to reference their article on Applied Materials efforts in this market (solar power). The pricing and discussion of cost of solar power can be a bit confusing. The typical benchmark used [...] ... (more)

Or “ Gift Card Madness Redux“. When I posted about gift cards in November, I warned how 27% (according to CNNMoney) of gift cards were never used, they were lost, forgotten, or put aside. Well, please allow me to add another warning; when a store for which you have a gift card files for bankruptcy, you [...] ... (more)

The full quote, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics” has been attributed to Mark Twain, and it continues to ring true for me. Last week, I quoted a CNNMoney article which stated, “The national median price drop of 5.8%, to $206,200 from $219,300, was the steepest ever recorded by the [...] ... (more)

Some time ago, I read a book titled “ Pop!: Why Bubbles Are Great For The Economy.” This is not a summary of that book, but I recommend it as it made for some interesting reading. Its premise was that bubbles leave in their wake some new infrastructure (telegraph lines or railroad tracks, as an example) [...] ... (more)

The debate continues about how the subprime mess occurred. Let me tell you how it would not have occurred: Maximum Loan to value: 80% any higher requires PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance) Debt ratio permitted: 28/36 - This means that one’s mortgage payment and property tax cannot exceed 28% of one’s gross monthly income and all one’s monthly [...] ... Earlier this month, I mentioned the Money Merge Account program on my feature site, and, as frequently happens, I find a magazine article coming to a similar conclusion. The May issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine has a brief article titled “Don’t fall for this mortgage pitch.” It’s a pretty brief article which again questions whether [...] ... (more)

A few weeks back, in the March 7 issue of The Week, I read an article titled “For energy, here comes the sun.” At first glance, it was good to see that I’m not the only one so enthusiastic, nor the only author of bad puns, having titled my first solar story “ here comes [...] ... (more)

I recently read someone suggesting this, and it seemed like an interesting idea. Borrowing at a low tax-deductible rate on one’s equity line of credit, to invest in tax free municipal bonds or bond funds, which, after tax, would offer a higher return. One problem, the tax code doesn’t permit this. From IRS Pub 936, page [...] ... (more)

During the March 21 showing, there was a quote from Henry Paulson: SEC. HENRY PAULSON: We place a high priority on the orderliness of our financial markets. Bear Stearns had a liquidity crisis and so we felt it was very important that this be resolved as a way to minimize impact on our economy. And Gwen Ifill’s [...] ... (more)
