In the beginning of April my husband and I contemplated cutting the cord on our satellite TV. We rarely watch television, so it seemed silly to pay over $80 each month to Direct TV. Through a number of wonderful reader suggestions we've decided to use a combination of Netflix and iTunes to watch our favorite shows for a fraction of the price. We're also planning on purchasing an Apple TV.We're not quite ready to make these changes just yet. For one, we need to purchase a TV that is compatible with the Apple TV, our current TV is not. While ... (more)

My dad, who is in his early 60s, is quite overweight. He needs to lose at least 60-70 pounds, maybe more. He's been overweight for as long as I can remember, though it seems he has gained even more weight in the last year or so.A few years ago, when my nephew was born, he decided to do something about his weight. He wanted to be around for his grandson, so he followed the Atkins diet and walked each day on a treadmill at home. During that time he managed to lose 50 pounds. Unfortunately that weight loss was short ... (more)

Last Friday night I drove a long time friend of mine down to the beach for an extended weekend. Shortly after hitting the road she informed me that she is in the process of separating from her husband. I've known of her unhappiness for quite awhile now, so I wasn't surprised by the news, but I was surprised by how difficult it was for her to voice her thoughts and concerns. We talked about the separation on the way down to the beach and the next day as we took a short walk along beside the waves, but I could tell ... I just joined the 29-Day Giving Challenge. The idea: give one thing away each day for 29 days. According to the challenge your 29 gifts can be anything... including material objects, money, time, smiles or kind thoughts. On the 30th day submit a story detailing the impact the challenge made on your life. To learn more about the challenge click here. I plan on starting the challenge when I get back from vacation on June 1st, between now and then I should be able to come up with a generous list. ... (more)

I can't believe I've only posted to this blog twice this week. I've been extremely distracted. A lot of thoughts are popping into and out of my head. Thoughts about my career, my friends, my hobbies, my passions, just about everything in my life. This seems to happen to me a few times a year, particularly during the seasonal transitions from winter to spring and spring to summer. I hope to get back into the swing of things next week. ... It seems that I am constantly receiving coupons in the mail from retail stores. In the past week the mailman has delivered coupons for Macy's, JCPenney's, Bath & Body Works and New York & Company. I know that the retail sector is getting hit hard and my current stack of coupons seems to be proof of that.In the past I received standard discounts: on average anywhere from 15 - 20% off my entire bill, but in the last week I've received at least one coupon for $10 off any $30 purchase and two coupons for $10 off any $10 purchase. Now ... Last week I attended a free 'Relaxation and Healing' seminar held at a wellness center near my home. The instructor started the class by leading us through a series of guided meditations. After we reached a deep state of relaxation she handed each of us a large sheet of paper and a handful of markers. We were each asked to draw a horizontal line across the middle of the page, followed by a series of hash marks representing the events of our day. The events could be big, (like going for a two hour run), or small, (like brushing your teeth ... (more)

The image above represents our current net worth including the liabilities on our mortgages but not including the value of our homes. According to the graph above if we cashed in all of our investments today my husband and I would have just enough money to pay off our mortgages. I removed the actual dollar figures for reasons I have discussed at length in previous posts, but you can clearly see that the green net worth bar is now slowly moving up, while the red liabilities bar begins to inch down.In reality, although our assets are now greater than ... This week I participated in a number of free classes at a local wellness center near my home. Various instructors spent one hour teaching meditation, relaxation techniques, yoga, and tai chi. During the first class an instructor guided me, and a group of five or six others, through a series of meditation exercises.I began meditating a few years back to deal with the stress of chronic illness. For months after my initial trip to the emergency room doctors failed to diagnose me. I spent days on end visiting medical specialists who had no clue what was wrong with me. Day ... (more)

After years of working for the same company I am becoming more and more disillusioned and disappointed by my current position. I have considered leaving on more occasions than I can count, but after careful analysis I always decide to stay. For the last couple of years I have been plagued by health issues that require a flexible work schedule. On a weekly basis I visit with at least two health practitioners, sometimes more. Chronic pain also makes it difficult to stick to a weekly work schedule. Some days I am able to fight the pain and go into the office, ... (more)

The 150th Carnival of Personal Finance is up over at Lazy Man and Money. I submitted Saving Pennies... Wasting Dollars, a post about how I unknowingly paid $60 in fees for a cell phone subscription service I never signed up for. The moral of the story: read all of your bills carefully, especially online versions of your bills. My favorite article was 20 Ways to Earn More and Spend Less: Steps to Becoming a Frugal Capitalist by Digerati Life. As I've mentioned before I am a bit of an anti-clutter fanatic. When we first moved into our house my husband joked about the chotchke law I enacted. Initially, I allowed no more than three chotchkes to cover the shelves and table tops in each room of our home. If an extra chotchke was added, an older one had to be taken away. Of course, the law has been broken many times, but in general the goal is to keep each room as clear of unnecessary clutter as possible. As I type this I realize it sound a bit neurotic, but ... As the prices of every day consumer goods rise it seems the typical consumer is spending less and less money for furniture and clothing. The earnings forecasts so far this year, (for the majority of retail stores), has been continually gloomy. After all, if we need to spend more to feed ourselves, we'll have to find a way to cloth ourselves for less money.Interestingly, while sales for typical retailers like department, furniture, and clothing stores is falling, sales for consignment stores and discount retailers is rising. Over the past year retail sales in this sector have risen by 2.2 billion. ... (more)

A bright pink bridesmaid dress has been sitting in the back of my closet since April of 2006. It's never been worn. I purchased it for a wedding that never took place. I've tried to get rid of it on a number of occasions. I shipped it to a place called Glamour Closet in California, which used to pay 50% for any bridesmaid dress that sold. Unfortunately, shortly after the dress arrived, the store owner changed her business model, and within a month the dress was shipped right back to me.Years ago I tried to sell it on eBay. When ... Today I received an automated email that my cell phone bill was available for viewing. I know this is going to sound rather odd, but I almost never look at the phone bill. Our phone bill is usually over 15 pages long. It contains all of the calls and text messages we've made and received over the month. Some months we make more calls then others, so each month the total we owe is entirely unique.Today the bill seemed rather large so I decided to take a peak at it. Sure enough, at the bottom of the 15 page bill ... (more)

I cleaned out the last of my bookshelves this week and purged a bunch of books that I haven't read in ages. In the past I've sold books on eBay, but my last few book sales didn't bring in much money. A number of the books sold for less than $2. This time around I didn't want to go through the hassle of packaging and shipping to a zillion different buyers. I wanted to find a buyer and ship all of my books off to one location.I've done this a couple times before using both Cash4Books and BlueRectangle. This ... (more)

I really enjoyed 20 Ways To Earn More and Spend Less: Steps To Becoming A Frugal Capitalist over at Digerati Life. This was a follow-up from Digerati's post from the previous day: Spend Less Than You Earn Or Earn More Than You Spend? I couldn't stop laughing as I read the first post. The frugal behaviors described me perfectly, the capitalist behaviors described my husband.I've never taken the time to specifically think about the differences between these two types of behaviors, but the Digerati Life does a great job of detailing the differences and providing examples of both. While I'm ... (more)

My last two posts focused on the financial assistance parents are often asked to provide for their adult children. This weekend Michelle Singletary looked at the flip side of this issue suggesting that adult children should provide financial assistance to their parents.Singletary, a writer for the Washington Post, notes that she often receives emails "from retired seniors who are having to tap into their savings to help grown children who are in trouble. Grandparents are helping pay the expenses of grandchildren. And these are not children who parents have abandoned them... These are children being raised in a middle-class, two-parent, ... (more)

Last week I questioned my in-laws decision to fund the down payment on a house for my brother-in-law. The questions at hand: when should parents provide financial assistance for their children, how should they provide it, and what will their children learn as a result of that assistance?A recent Money article, What You Owe Your Kids, sums up the issue perfectly. At the root of each financial gift parents should ask themselves "whether giving kids money will speed them toward independence or prolong dependendency." The article asks parents to think through their philosophy of giving ahead of time. In other ... (more)

My in-laws are currently considering providing the down payment on a house for my brother-in-law. My brother-in-law is twenty-five, makes roughly $50,000 a year in an IT related position and currently rents an apartment for approximately $900 a month, including utilities. He failed out of college during his younger years and is now pursuing an undergrad degree at night. He takes roughly one to two courses per semester, paying approximately $690 for each three credit course. His parents have done very well for themselves by saving and purchasing real estate throughout their lifetimes. They are in their early sixties and ... (more)

Last night my good friend, M, and I went out for dinner at an Italian restaurant in between my office and her home. M and I went to college together back in the mid 90s. When we first graduated we both made very little money. Those first few years were so tight that I knew exactly how much money I could spend at dinner. Whenever I went out I'd choose one of the most inexpensive items on the menu, add up the tax and tip in my head, and then order. Of course, sometimes we paid exactly what we owed ... (more)

My tiny, sleek iPhone popped out of my pocket and into my toilet. The toilet was empty and newly cleaned, but my heart jumped as I watched it splash into the bowl. I reached in with one hand, grabbed a hand towel with the other, and dried it for the next ten minutes. Oddly enough my phone continued to work. I thought I'd dodged a bullet, but less than thirty minutes later the phone showed no signs of life.So I googled for 'iPhone in the Toilet.' From the search results there are clearly a lot of iPhone users who have ... (more)

I've been thinking more and more about ending my monthly Direct TV subscription. These days I find myself watching less and less TV. On most days I only watch twice a day. After work I like to decompress with an old episode of Seinfeld and before I head to bed I usually watch Family Guy or American Dad. I also watch Lost once a week and the Hills, (yes I know I'm not 16), every so often. The only exception to this rule occurs from November to March when I watch Maryland's away games on TV. Last week I took advantage of eBay's penny listing sale. I listed six items, (three books and three DVDs), for a total of 6 cents. Four of the six items sold, and I netted roughly $80 after accounting for miscellaneous fees from eBay and PayPal. I'm a clutter fanatic so it's always nice to rid the house of unnecessary items and make a little extra money in the process.I often wait for eBay to run a sale prior to listing my items. I also try to sell a number of items at a time. I list them all on the ... (more)
