Twenty years ago I was a freshman in college. I was a poor kid from a poor family, but my roommates came from wealth. In order to fit in, I went out and picked up a department store credit card. I bought some new clothes, an electric shaver, and a bottle of cologne. From that [...] ... ( more)

Three years ago, I decided to get out of debt. I hit the books, reading one personal finance title after another, searching for answers. Two books — Your Money or Your Life and The Total Money Makeover — were perfect for my situation. They gave me the tools I needed to tackle my problems. Now [...] ... ( more)

It’s dark and stormy here in the Pacific Northwest. Some wet and windy storms have begun to move across the region, and we’re getting even more rain than normal. I worry that another one of our trees might fall over. (We lost one a couple years ago, and it was a pain.) Meanwhile, here’s a [...] ... ( more)

I had a great time at Get Rich Slowly during November. I had fun writing articles, had fun sharing guest posts, and had fun reading the comments you folks shared. There were some great discussions, both on the blog and in the forums. There’s more interesting stuff scheduled for December, but I’m really looking forward [...] ... ( more)

I made a rare trip to Powell’s City of Books yesterday. This used to be one of my favorite hang-outs, but as I’ve learned to love frugality and to hate clutter, my book spending has plummeted. As a result, I spend much less time in book stores. I use the public library instead.
Still, sometimes [...] ... ( more)

I’ve received a lot of e-mail lately about very specific financial situations. Remember: I’m not qualified to give financial advice. I can share my experiences with you, and I can summarize the things I learn, but I’m not a trained financial adviser. And I don’t have time to reply to every e-mail. If you want [...] ... ( more)

Lisa is trying to decide what to do with her life. She’s in her mid-thirties, has two young children, and for the past few years has spent most of her time parenting. Now that the kids are older, she’d like to go back to school. But she’s worried it might not be a smart financial [...] ... ( more)

This is a rare “re-run” at Get Rich Slowly. Because I love The Cinnamon Bear so much, I plan to post this every year on the 29th of November. If you have young children — and even if you don’t — I encourage you to listen to these old radio broadcasts with your family.
Holiday traditions [...] ... ( more)

For three years I’ve had a single goal directing my actions: I wanted to get out of debt. Now that my consumer debt is nearly gone, I’ve spent a lot of time wondering what to do next. I was worried that I’d lose focus, lose direction. That’s not going to be the case. I’ve set [...] ... ( more)

This is a guest-post from Free Money Finance. It’s a follow-up to Mrs. Micah’s post earlier today.
A few weeks ago, J.D. and I were chatting when he asked me what it felt like to be debt-free. He’d read on my blog that I had no debt and was curious if I’d write about it for [...] ... ( more)

This is a guest post from Mrs. Micah of Finance and Life. Look for a related post later today.
Getting an interest-only mortgage can seem like a great idea when you’re trying to buy a house and can’t afford a down payment (or if you have bad credit). Earlier this week, I read the story of [...] ... ( more)

I finally have the guest-post situation under control — I’ve created a spreadsheet to track submissions. That means I’m ready to accept new articles from you folks. For example, if you have an interesting money-related Christmas story, or tips to save on the holiday season, please drop me a line. But be aware that for [...] ... ( more)

USA Today recently featured a nervous article about the economy. According to the authors, the U.S. credit crisis isn’t just a problem for big banks — it’s also a problem for you and me.
As the credit crisis seeps into farther-flung corners of the economy, more of us will find it harder — and costlier — [...] ... ( more)

The one-year warranty on my MacBook Pro expired last week, presenting me with a choice: sign up for an extended warranty or live without it? I’ve never been an extended warranty kind of guy. They’re cash cows for the companies that sell them. Anything that is a cash cow for manufacturers and retailers is generally [...] ... ( more)

Cold cold cold — I am cold.
Remember George Bailey’s “drafty old barn” in It’s a Wonderful Life? Our place is like that. This 100-year-old farmhouse is cold all winter long. There are drafts at the doors, there’s inadequate insulation, and we have 30 windows in 1800 square feet. (Our old house had eight windows [...] ... ( more)

This is a guest post from Jeff Sackmann, a GMAT tutor based in New York City. Jeff runs the blog GMAT Hacks. He is the author of The GMAT Math Bible and several other GMAT-related resources.

It’s early on a cold Sunday morning. One of the squirrels has found his way on top of the house, and he’s skittering across the roof, pausing occasionally to thump thump thump at something. Silly squirrel. The holiday week meant it was a little quiet in the Money Blog Network (and beyond). Still, there were [...] ... ( more)

This is a guest post from Stephen Ward, who writes at Project Paradox.
Although many frugality experts decry the need for television, my wife and I enjoy it too much to give it up. That didn’t stop me from getting a better deal, though! Just the other day, I called up my provider to get my [...] ... ( more)

This is a guest post from Karl Staib.
A few months ago, J.D. wrote an interesting review of Voluntary Simplicity, a book dedicated to living a stress-free life. What I found most interesting was not the review, but J.D.’s introduction:
For years, one of my goals has been to achieve a “pastoral lifestyle”. This amuses my friends, [...] ... ( more)

It’s Thanskgiving Day in the United States — my favorite holiday. Here’s a video from 1951 that celebrates Thanksgiving. While it’s a little schmaltzy — and filled with lots of not-so-subtle “I’m glad I’m not a communist” sentiment — it does a fine job of conveying the mood and meaning of the holiday.
I’m in Central [...] ... ( more)

While my U.S. readers are spending their Thanksgiving holidays eating turkey, watching football, and visiting with family, it’s the perfect time to perform another roundup of personal finance sites from around the world. It’s been ten months since I last updated this list. As usual, if you know of a non-U.S. personal finance site, please [...] ... ( more)

This is a guest post from Amanda, a Colorado tech writer and an activist for children with congenital heart disease.
For a couple of years I’ve been learning the “tips and tricks” to saving money. I’ve read about freezing your credit cards, paying yourself first, the “latte factor,” etc., but the most important thing I’ve learned, [...] ... ( more)

As always, there’s plenty of good stuff out there about personal finance and personal success. Here are some of my favorite recent articles:
Three Bean Salad shares “How I increased my net worth by $12,000 when I make only $21,000.” The secret? Saving, saving, saving. I love that the author’s #1 change is “looking for additional [...] ... ( more)
