With Abu Dhabi investing 7.5 billion of his oil money in Citigroup, it’s time to ask the question… is it time to buy? Rumors are circulating that this isn’t the only deal in the works. CNBC open speculated that someone might invest significant amounts in homebuilders in the coming weeks. I believe [...] ... (more)

While I was away on vacation I missed the huge announcement from J.D. of Get Rich Slowly. He’s quitting his day job to pursue his dreams of writing. If that sounds a little familiar perhaps it should. He’s also launching a health site called Get Fit Slowly, which might not seem too unfamiliar to those of you who read Lazy Man and Health. We are both making the change for the reason, to get more time back in our lives. That’s where the similarities end. J.D. earns around $5,000 a month in revenue from Get Rich ... (more)

Last week, MoneyNing wrote an article about gift cards. In it, he states many of the reasons that gift cards are evil. He’s not the only one against gift cards. Jim from Blueprint to Financial Prosperity thinks they are stupid as well. In many ways, I agree with both of these [...] ... (more)

I apologize for back to back editions of links. I figure most of you are still out of town enjoying left over turkey sandwiches. (Is there anything better than leftover turkey and stuffing in a sandwich with gravy poured over it?) I’m not turning into a full-time link machine though. I [...] ... (more)

For those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you had a great turkey day. My family has a Thanksgiving tradition of making a Christmas list. This was always the hardest thing for me growing up. Everything that I wanted was just a little more expensive than what was deemed polite for the [...] ... (more)

I was going to take the day off, but I read this article from Brip Blap and got inspired to take some time while watching football. Here are some things I’m thankful for: Bill Belichick, Scott Pioli, Tom Brady, Randy Moss, and the 2008 San Francisco draft pick. The new Valdiguie Charles Shaw wine at Trader Joe’s. [...] ... [Note: While this article is focused Aruba, there’s a lot of universal tips that can be used on many vacations.] Recently, I spent a week in heavenly bliss in Aruba. If pressed I’d say it’s my favorite place on earth. There’s perfect weather, perfect dining, and relatively affordable luxury accommodations (more on those later). [...] ... (more)

It’s a little past the middle of the month, but this is the earliest I could get this update in. This is the first month where I didn’t have a typical day job, so I expected a drop. What I didn’t anticipate is a big drop in the stock market combined with a [...] ... (more)

This is a guest post from DebtFree-Revolution. I encourage you to subscribe to her RSS feed. Lazy Man and I disagree on the whole debt idea. This surprises me, since as I have eliminated all but one debt (and that last one will go away very soon) I have discovered that debt elimination is [...] ... (more)

This is a guest post from I’ve Paid For This Twice Already…. I encourage you to subscribe to her RSS feed. First, just let me say that I believe in the Lazy Man philosophy as espoused by this blog. I would love to make my money work so I don’t have to. But in the past, being lazy for me was basically equal to not taking the time to do much about anything. And as you can guess, it wasn’t the best idea I ever had. These are 5 ways that being lazy about my money ... (more)

Brip Blap has laid down a challenge… “What one goal have you always had privately that you would be willing to commit to publicly - right now? Post it and give a public commitment to stick to it!” Unfortunately, I have a way of putting a lot of goals out publicly, so trying to find a new private one is difficult. Even worse is sticking to the goal. I could list quite a few that I haven’t fallen through with in just the last year. Despite that disappointment I’m doing better than I thought on my ... (more)

Glblguy is the author of Gather Little By Little , a Christian personal finance blog focused on growing wealth using common sense biblical practices and based on the wisdom found in Proverbs 13:11 - “He who gathers money little by little makes it grow.” I encourage you to subscribe to his RSS feed. Prior to getting control of our finances, the main reason my wife and I would fuss (that means fight/argue here in the southern U.S.) was over money and finances. Turns out, we weren’t alone. The number one reason couples fight is over money. Studies ... (more)

This is a guest post from Plonkee Money. She is a UK based financial blogger, so you’ll minor differences to what you may be used to (like using the Pound rather than American dollar).  The concepts are universal, so I encourage you to subscribe to her RSS feed. I’m not the most organized person in the world, and this is not a good trait when combined with my penchant for putting off till later what doesn’t strictly have to be done right now. In some respects this is comical. I can get ready for work including taking a shower within ... (more)

This is a guest post from Brip Blap. I encourage you to subscribe to his RSS feed. “The question isn’t at what age I want to retire, it’s at what income.” - George Foreman Spend less than you earn! If you’re reading Lazy Man and Money, chances are good that you’ve already given some thought to alternative income. Everyone has a primary source of income. Usually it is a traditional job - an employer who asks them to show up from 9 am to 5 pm. Income can also come from self-employment, a small business, unemployment checks, ... (more)

I’m going on my honeymoon this week and next. Since I will be outside the country, I will likely have a limited Internet connection. This means that I might be a little slow approving comments. I may also be blogging, but even if I can’t, have no fear - there will be plenty to read. Several newer bloggers who I’ve been reading for some time have been kind enough to submit guest posts. Amazingly all of the guest posts had something relevant to the Lazy Man theme. Some chose to write about the lazy aspect and ... (more)

I’m heading out of the country on our honeymoon. I’ve got a number of articles lined up that I think you’ll enjoy, so don’t forget about me. There are more details to follow on Monday. In the meantime, here are some articles that I liked this week: Golbguru give us some things we should know about percentage traps. This is a great article and not one to miss. Halloween is over, how much extra candy did you have left over? If your answer is none, then there’s good news. Stores across the nation will be putting their leftover candy on sale. They need to clear the aisles for the end of the year holiday sales. Many of the stores near you may have already replaced the orange and black with the red and green. Now that you know there’s a sale, you need to have a plan. Getting the best pricing is a difficult challenge. Do you buy right after Halloween and get ... (more)

With the start of another month, it’s time to review my alternative income. The big difference this month is that the alternative income became my only income as I resigned from my day job. I’m not really sure I can call it my alternative income any more, but I will continue to do so to remain consistent. The total this month clocks in at $1375.93. Since I made $1186.82 last month, this is a solid gain. (These numbers, as always, are after taxes.) I’d like to thank this advertiser who contributed towards that goal. With ... (more)

Prosper.com released a few new features recently. These features might be interesting to all lenders or potential lenders. Here’s a run down on some of the new features and how they could affect Prosper’s peer-to-peer lending market. Portfolio Plans - Prosper now provides an automated method to bid on set portfolios. You can choose from 4 model portfolios that range from conservative (estimated return of 8.37%) to aggressive (estimated return of 11.06%). Prosper uses data from over a year of loans to determine the estimated return. I’m not sure if that sample size is large enough ... (more)

Yesterday I wrote about free tacos from Taco Bell (available today), but that’s small potatoes. The real winners are Jordan’s Furniture customers who took advantage of a furniture promotion. The promotion offered to refund all the customers’ money if the Red Sox won the World Series. Now thousands of people are cashing in to the tune of more than $15M. Jordan’s Furniture doesn’t have to bear the brunt of the promotion. They bought insurance, so it’s the insurance company that has to pay up. When I live in Boston, I had always bought my ... (more)

When I considered buying an Ellsbury jersey back in July, I had no idea that he’d be giving me (and the rest of America) a free taco. Allow me to explain… Taco Bell ran a promotion for free taco’s during the World Series. If there was a stolen base, they’d give America a free Taco. You can read more about it here. Since Jacoby Ellsbury (Tacoby Bellsbury is his new nickname) stole a base, Taco Bell is making good on it’s promise. You can collect your free taco tomorrow (Tuesday) from 2-5PM. I don’t want it to ... (more)

Ever since I’ve stopped working at my day job, everyday conversations with friends have gotten difficult. You don’t notice the number of times that people nonchalantly as how your job is going - until you are jobless. It’s as if they are saying, “How are you doing?”, without expecting to get a long, detailed answer. However, the last few times I have been asked that, they have been quite surprised. I really don’t know how to answer the questions of “How’s Work?” or “What do you do?” I try to say, “I was asked to ... (more)

I started a new blog this week. I tried not to, but circumstances were beyond my control. Recently, I was driving home and though I was 3,000 miles away from my hometown of Boston, the radio couldn’t get off the topic. With the Red Sox in the World Series, the Patriots undefeated, and BC #2 ranked team in college football, Boston is “an embarrassment of riches” according to the broadcasters. They are 100% right. A neighbor saw my Red Sox shirt the other day and we got to talking. She’s a San Francisco Giants ... (more)

It’s been a little more than two weeks since I’ve been without a day job. Here’s a little update of the odds and ends of how that is going and what I’m doing. I find myself twice as busy as I’ve ever been when I had a job. It’s a good busy though, making time for myself. I’m getting to the gym more, the home is cleaner, and I’m slowly getting thing done that I’ve been putting off for a long time. We are also better prepared for emergencies.
