Yesterday, I wrote about my techno-lust with the Asus Eee. Not long after the post went live, the lowest possible version on Craigslist for $200. That’s $100 less than retail, and $40 less from any other price I’ve previous seen. I jumped at the opportunity to own it. I figured that in the worst case scenario, I could sell it for a very small profit on Ebay tomorrow. I love when I can try “new-to-me” technology with little or no financial downside. So now I get to “the catch…” It is the pink version. ... (more)

I’ve got a couple of pieces of carnival news that may be of interest to other personal finance bloggers. (Readers who are not bloggers, might wish to move on or read about my new techno-lust.) The Carnival of P2P Lending is looking for bloggers to host upcoming carnivals. It’s usually a small carnival making it a very small commitment. The small size lends itself to a creative and entertaining carnival. Lastly, the Carnival of P2P Lending has a five day window from the last submission until it is due to run. This means you won’t be ... (more)

A year ago, I was looking for a portable computer that could allow me to blog from places like Aruba. I thought I found an acceptable solution with a PDA and bluetooth keyboard. It didn’t work quite as well as I hoped. As two pieces, you can’t put it on your lap and type. The PDA had some difficulties connecting to WIFI access points. The small screen with 640×480 resolution made web navigation, and blogging difficult. In the end, I realized I had to bring my real computer making that travel computer a poor ... (more)

My wife is active duty military - and with that comes a number of perks. One of those great military benefits is a significant savings on vacations via flights, hotels, and car rentals. Eighteen months ago we went to Hawaii at a cost of half what others would expect to pay. On Saturday, I found out how it would have been even cheaper if I did a little more planning. Today, I’d like to share some of the ways to save money with nearly free vacations - but remember, you may need to be in the ... (more)

A couple of weekends ago, I a good friend of mine invited me out on his boat. It was beautiful day, around 80 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. We headed on up to McCovey Cove to sit outside the San Francisco Giants stadium and enjoy the day. There’s also the small chance [...] ... (more)

It’s the middle of the month, so it’s a time to reflect on my net worth. I’ve been very happy to break even lately as I focus on making my businesses grow - while trying to slow down from the rat race. April came as a very pleasant surprise - the stock market rebound had boosted my net worth $10,000 - to $218,825. This is despite the value of my Boston property reaching an all-time low. If that returns to the norm, it would add another $20,000 to my net worth. Last month, I had mentioned taking a part ... (more)

I don’t know what it is about this weekend, but Amy Adams is invading my wife and my lives this weekend. Friday night, we went to the local DVD Play in an attempt to rent Juno. Since it’s so new we had to settle for a back-up. The only movie my wife and I could agree on was Enchanted - starring Amy Adams. We watched that Friday night. Saturday morning, I woke up early and put in the next movie in the Netflix queue, Talladega Nights - of which she has a sizable minor role. ... (more)

Today’s post is from SF Boater, a friend of mine who chronicles his voyages. I have very little experience with boats and the associated financials so I suggested that he share that aspect with Lazy Man and Money readers. Boats are a part of my life… they always have been. Growing up in FL on the inter-coastal waterway I loved fishing and boating and sometimes even boating and fishing. Even now that I am in the bay area I have found memories of those days. When I graduated college and moved to the Bay area the one thing I ... (more)

Last year, around this time, I asked readers to invest my money. I’ve decided to turn this into an annual post - at least as long as I qualify for a Roth IRA. Requisite Financial Background: I have $4000 from my 2007 Roth IRA to invest. I know I should have my 2008 contribution to invest as well, but I’m still scraping up that money. I do believe in a good asset allocation. I currently have 1/4th of my Roth IRA money in Vanguard Small-Cap (Ticker: VB), 1/4th in Vanguard Total Stock Market (Ticker: VTI), 1/4th in iShares MSCI EAFE ... (more)

It’s long been assumed that money doesn’t buy happiness. There was a famous study in the 70s (PDF) that supported this claim. It concluded that as long as your basic needs are met, money doesn’t buy happiness - it’s money relative to the people around you. If you don’t believe the study, what about the anecdotal evidence of lottery winners reporting that they are less happier after winning? When I think about it, some of the happiest people I know aren’t particularly rich, but have good friends, family, and hobbies that they enjoy. New York Times published ... (more)

My wife has been an active member in a nation-wide, young adults group. I am a member as well, but I’m not nearly as active (lack of time, plus my Laziness kicks in). The groups goals are very noble. They aim to help members with public speaking and event planning skills while raising money for charity through local businesses. Recently my wife went to a meeting and was gone longer than usual. I got a little concerned, so I called her to find out how the meeting was going. It turned out that it ... (more)

The San Francisco Gate writes that more and more divorced couples are forced to live together while trying to sell their home. People can’t sell their homes, leading to a real-life version of the Jennifer Anison/Vince Vaughn movie, The Break-Up. It’s not just that there are too many sellers and few buyers, it’s that people have bought more home than they could afford. As housing values dropped, they have found that they owe the bank more than the home is worth. In order to leave they are going to have to dip into their savings to pay the ... (more)

It’s not very often that I can offer you a very easy to way to earn $25 - with little risk and about 5 minutes of time (they claim 2 minutes, but I’m often just a little slow). The other day a friend of mine let me know that a new company is planning to compete with Paypal - Revolution Money Exchange. It seems that users can exchange money with no fees - it reminds me of why I signed up for Paypal many years ago. If you open up an account from this link, they’ll start ... (more)

I was watching the local news this past weekend, when there was an interesting segment. In order to qualify for the free money being given in the tax stimulus package, you must file taxes for this year. Many seniors other low-income people may not be required to file their taxes. Furthermore because they might not have filed taxes in years, they probably aren’t aware that they need to do this to claim their share of the money. I realize it is late in the tax season to get taxes filed. Fortunately, if you are in this ... (more)

On Friday I went a little off the handle reviewing SmartyPig’s registration process. I got frustrated by the many security steps that I had to take before finally getting locked out because my information didn’t match the information in Equifax/SmartyPig’s database. What I should have said is that many online banking security systems are not user friendly nowadays - and it’s not their fault. The fear of identity theft has driven everyone including regulators to more and more stringent standards. What confuses me is that not every bank has the expansive security process. I have accounts with ... (more)

A couple of weeks back the fine folks at SmartyPig wrote me to tell me about their new service. They even offered me a $50 gift card to either try the service or give away to a reader. I decided to keep it for three reasons: I have had a bad history with giveaways in the past. Even recently, I was afforded the ability to give out Lending Club lending accounts with $50 in them - only to have them stop allowing people to lend for undisclosed amount of time. Given that I’ve never used this new ... (more)

I, like many other Lending Club members received a distressing e-mail a couple of days ago. I waited until now to sort out how I feel about things. Here are the highlights that I found interesting: Lending Club has started a process to register, with the appropriate securities authorities, promissory notes that may be offered and sold to lenders through our site in the future. Until we complete the registration process, we will not accept new lender registrations or allow new commitments from existing lenders… The borrowing side of our site will remain generally unaffected by this registration process; ... I came across what’s wrong with being middle class by Mrs. Micah the other day. It’s a simply and beautiful question. Some of my closest friends who are doctors, lawyers, and financial Wall Street somethings or others. (I can never really figure out what the Wall Street guy does, but I think it involves TPS reports and a high degree of education and I expect pay). While they are still a little young side to be in the upper class, I suspect they are in the upper-middle class - and probably will be in the upper class ... (more)

[This particular article is a little lacking on personal finance. Sometimes the personal is more important than the finance - this is one of those days. Please give me the benefit of the doubt for a day or two to bring it back to personal finance.] A few months back I bought a used iPod Nano off of Craigslist. It’s a first generation 2GB version and it cost me $60. I filled it up with some of my favorite albums and listen to it for a couple of hours a day. A couple of minutes ago, ... (more)

I made fairly sizable purchase last Friday. I called up Comcast, my cable operator and said, “Yes, I’d like to sign up for the MLB Extra Innings package.” My wife and I will pay $160 to watch the next six month of our favorite team, the Boston Red Sox from our San Francisco area home. It hurts me to spend money like this. It seems like living in a different location shouldn’t prevent you from seeing your favorite team. Alas, that’s the way things work today and I have to live with it. I ... (more)
