In big crowded cities people not only have to worry about pickpockets and purse snatchers but cell phone snatchers too. Motorbikes are common throughout southeast asia and anyone unsuspecting chatting on the phone near the curb or crossing the street is vulnerable to getting their phone snatched by a passing motorist. I actually witnessed this happening [...] ... (more)

A lot of places in Indonesia and Vietnam charge 3% for taking Visa/Mastercard and 5% for taking American Express. One of the owners of a business in Indonesia I was talking to explained that it is against the merchant terms and agreements like it is in the US but everyone seems to do it regardless [...] ... When you land in Jakarta, Indonesia and purchase a visa on arrival, don’t use your credit card. The payment counter does take visa/mastercard but they code the purchase as a cash advance. The clock on interest ticking starts the date the amount hits your account. It’s not much on a $50 transaction (two 30-day visas) [...] ... (more)

One of my friends who works at one of Target’s pharmacies informed me that when people go up to the pharmacy counter with general merchandise and ask if they can check them out they aren’t allowed to refuse them. So if the regular checkout counters is jam packed and the pharmacy counter is still open. Skip [...] ... (more)

As many of my regulars know I’m a big fan of Kiva.org. Ending world poverty is a near impossible task but it isn’t hard to loan capital to those that wish to lift themselves out of poverty. So why am I funding $4,000+ worth of loans? Simply put, it’s all the money I have excluding my [...] ... (more)

If you use PayPal frequently for purchases you might notice that sometimes PayPal refuses to give you the option to charge a purchase to your credit card if you have a sufficient PayPal balance to cover it. The reasoning is basically they profit more by not having to pay credit card processing fees. So why do [...] ... (more)

eBay finally grants me PowerSeller status! It doesn’t mean much besides the fact I get the little icon next to my name and I get a 5-15% discount on final value fees. Considering I paid roughly $90 in final value fees on my last invoice I’ll probably save roughly $4.5 (5%) or $13.50 (15%). Getting PowerStatus [...] ... (more)

Discovery Channel’s ad campaign featuring the slogan “The world is just awesome” is genius and spot-on. It accomplishes several key things: It gives me a newfound respect for the world. The commerical showcases the Discovery Channel’s programs. It’s extremely catchy. Which is probably why I’m blogging about it. ... (more)

As everyone has probably noticed, the price of oil has skyrocketed to new highs recently. The main causes have been increasing demand and a weakening dollar. One of the big problems is a lot of people drive like idiots and get poor mileage in their oversized cars. The same guy you see on the news [...] ... (more)

I awoke this morning to find that the us government added $300 to my net worth. The reason I get $300 instead of $600 is I paid no taxes for 2007 (all federal taxes paid were refunded). I’m not particularly short on cash these days as I still have money form my birthday last month in [...] ... (more)

I finally got around to upping my emergency fund contribution to $35/week. Upon checking my account balance it turns out my weekly contributions of $30/week have added another $1,000 to my emergency fund balance since Sept 07 when my emergency fund hit the $1,500 mark. I’m setting a definite target amount for my emergency fund. The [...] ... (more)

Back at the end of December I decided to open up a position in Marvel (MVL). Immediately afterwards the stock took a small plunge (which happens a lot with investments in retrospect). With the recent Iron Man success the stock is hitting new highs and I’m a happy shareholder. It’s pointless to be happy as [...] ... (more)

Recently I turned 21 and discovered the whole “happy hour” experience. Those unfamiliar with “happy hour” concept can check wikipedia. When a establishment like the Olive Branch can offer $1 mugs and $0.50 pizza slices weekdays 4-7pm… you know i’m there. There needs to be a collective source for information for all the happy hours that [...] ... (more)

Awhile back I posted about how keyherb.com doesn’t know simple business sense. I guess the people over at keyherb.com found my blog post and decided to spam my blog with 3 comments. Once in a while I browse cnn.com for news stories and I’ve noticed that the quality and sophistication of CNN has degraded slowly over the years. Rockstar Games is releasing Grand Theft Auto IV on April 29th and I already pre-ordered it through Amazon. Yes, we all know I’m a huge fan of Netflix and a current subscriber. So why am I unsubscribing? No, Blockbuster didn’t win me over so keep your pants on. If you’re a regular reader you know I’m a big fan of the Consumerist blog.
