I remember the day I first considered buying instead of renting. I was sitting on the floor of the 1-bedroom apartment my then-husband and I shared, looking at the free newspaper I’d snagged from the laundry room. We’d just received notice that our rent would be going up, and so I was looking for [...] ... (more)

Sometimes people feel like it’s too late to fund retirement — like they’ve missed the retirement boat and so they may as well not bother at this point. But there’s an old saying that goes, “The best time to plant an oak tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” The [...] ... (more)

The following is a guest post from Kimber Chin (http://businessromance.com/) who writes romance novels based in the business world. She also blogs at http://www.nolimitsladies.com/. As a romance writer, I LOVE this time of year with so many couples getting married and buying homes. It makes me think back a decade when the hubby and [...] ... (more)

Whether you’re saving for a down payment or wanting to lose weight, the principle is the same. You can change your life with one simple question: Does what I’m about to do line up with my goals? It’s just a matter of priorities. You CAN do the things you want most, but you have to make [...] ... (more)

I finally logged in to my TreasuryDirect account in order to schedule a purchase, and discovered that I had a notification waiting for me there. It said, “Treasury is now offering marketable securities at a lower minimum. Treasury Bills, Notes, Bonds and TIPS can now be purchased in TreasuryDirect for a minimum of $100 and [...] ... (more)

Our house was built in the late 70’s. Part of its 70’s-fabulous look included a pair of windows that weren’t even glass. (They were made from two thin sheets of decorative plastic.) But even the windows that were glass had issues: They were practically falling out of their ugly aluminum frames, and they allowed water [...] ... (more)

Rising gas prices affect us all, but they affect some people’s jobs (and therefore bottom lines) more directly than others. We passed a taxi the other day that had been painted green. It was a Prius with a banner on it that proclaimed it a “green taxi”. I’m pretty sure that one reason for using [...] ... (more)

I did get my (unexpected) tax refund recently. I’m glad that there was a little bit of time before finding out that I was going to be getting a refund and actually receiving it. That gave me time to contemplate what I most wanted to do with the money. Weighing your options without making an [...] ... (more)

“Good debt” is often defined (by those who believe in it) as debt that’s taken out on an appreciating asset. Houses and student loans are generally lumped into that category. The idea behind taking on “good debt” is that you are risking some money now for a greater return later. For example, you might [...] ... (more)

There’s a story that goes like this: Put a frog in a pot of hot water & it’ll jump out. Put it in a pot of lukewarm water and gradually turn up the heat, and it’ll sit there til it dies. The idea is that the frog won’t notice things are getting too hot for [...] ... (more)

Basic Financial asked recently about my gardening start-up costs. They were pretty high, due to a few factors that probably won’t apply to many people who garden: 1) I live in Arizona. Our yard consists of rock-covered caliche. That kind of yard is great for making bricks and earthen houses and conserving water, but not [...] ... (more)

Let me start off by saying that I’m grateful to have health insurance. I pay about $80 per month for coverage for just myself, which is a good deal. But… ARGH! I have about $2100 in medical expenses happening right now. I’ve known about these expenses for a few months — in time to figure them [...] ... (more)

Well April was a nice month. We had lower expenses than usual, due to refinancing our mortgage the previous month. (Our first payment isn’t due until June 1.) We decided to use the money that we would have paid to our mortgage to finish up our windows. It felt very strange not sending [...] ... (more)

Dave Ramsey fans will recognize the phrase “beans & rice, rice & beans” from his show. I listen to his podcast, and don’t think there’s been one yet where he hasn’t said that phrase. Since I’m a rather literal person, my reaction until recently has been to think “ew I don’t like those” whenever [...] ... (more)

I use Gmail for all of my email, and love it. It allows you to send and receive email from a variety of different addresses, which means that I don’t have to check my 18 thousand different email accounts individually. That alone is a big time-saver, but my favorite feature of Gmail is the way [...] ... (more)

We finally completed one major project on our house: all of our (crappy!) windows have now been replaced with dual-pane, low-e, argon-filled windows. And as a bonus, they’re all shiny and clean. It’s such a relief to have that done. We’ll spend less money on heating and cooling, and be more comfortable in the [...] ... (more)

Learning about investing can be like learning to speak a foreign language. There are all kinds of investing terms out there that can be pretty confusing. There are mid caps, large blends, P/Es, and iced quad venti vanilla nonfat whip caramel macchiatos. (Ok, so that last is an attempt at a Starbucks order…) [...] ... (more)

It’s all in how you look at things. I remember walking into the sales office where I worked many years ago and seeing a large banner across someone’s desk that proclaimed “opportunityisnowhere”. I couldn’t figure out why anyone would want to post a sign like that, so I stopped at the person’s desk and asked. I [...] ... (more)

Just call me the clueless gardener. (Although I hope to change that.) As you can see above, our corn is doing well. It’s been so great to see it progress from tiny sprouts to where it is today. I hope it continues to shoot up. Our tomato plants are doing pretty well too so [...] ... (more)

I’ll admit it: I’m a list-maker. I have daily lists in my planner, lists in Google documents, lists on my computer desktop, lists on yellow stickies, and lists on the fridge. And I just discovered a site called Kalisty, which allows you to keep, share, and interact with lists. It’s in beta, and is [...] ... (more)

What would you do with a windfall? It’s pretty easy to say things like “payoff the house/payoff debt” or “invest part of it and go on a trip” but actually doing that might be another matter. There’s a difference between deciding what you’d do with a windfall in the abstract and actually receiving an [...] ... (more)

Over the past few months I’ve invested in 12 different individual stocks. (And I have my eye on at least 6 more, but it will take more time before I’m able to purchase those.) All of the stocks that I chose were trading at $150 or less at the time that I bought, since [...] ... (more)

Have you ever taken a trip somewhere exotic or bought an expensive item, and then listened to the reactions of others around you? You’ll rarely hear someone ask how long it took to save up the money for an expensive item. In fact I don’t think I’ve EVER been asked a thing like [...] ... (more)

This azcentral article about homeowners who mail in their keys instead of making payments described a situation that’s just pathetic on so many levels. It said: “Joan Shaffer is turning in the keys of the north Phoenix Tatum Ranch home she bought with her daughter in late 2005. They put nothing down on the home, [...] ... (more)

My son recently got a new cell phone, and while I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, I wondered why he wanted a new one. He explained that the newer phones look nicer, have more features, and work better. I pointed out that there will always be a nicer-looking phone with more features [...] ... (more)
