A friend was looking into refinancing her mortgage the other day, and got me thinking about it too. I quickly realized that we could cut our interest rate by 1%, lower our monthly payments, and shorten the term of our loan for very little cost.
So I applied online with Pentagon Federal Credit Union. During the [...] ... ( more)

We had 3 more of our windows replaced recently, bringing us up to 5 new windows out of 7. These were the next-least-efficient of our windows: one had a hole in it that let in rain, another had a pane that was about to fall out, and the third was just oversize and inefficient [...] ... ( more)

I’ll admit it, I picked up this audiobook by Brian Tracy because of the title alone, but it turned out to be a good book. Its tagline is “21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time”. Eat That Frog actually refers to a quote from Mark Twain, which says,
If the [...] ... ( more)

I have a health care flexible spending account, which I allotted a big chunk of change to for 2008 since I have quite a few medical expenses coming up. This amounts to about $72 being withheld from each of my paychecks. Now, I’ve gotten paid once so far this year, so only $72 [...] ... ( more)

My pet peeve is stores that insist that you take a bag when you buy something. This happened again last weekend. I went to the mall in search of at least one sweater so that I could have more than 5 day’s worth of winter clothes. My first stop was Dillard’s, where I found a [...] ... ( more)

We’ve got a whole host of things that we’d like to buy over the coming year, so we took a page from the 20 Year Challenge and made up a priority list. Here’s what we have in mind, in the order that we plan to do/purchase them:
Bridge (for husband’s teeth)
Shelf in kitchen (this just [...] ... ( more)

I got a copy my credit report from Experian in the mail this past weekend, and was interested to note that it listed the dates that closed credit cards and loans would “fall off” the report. Apparently it takes a LONG time — 10 years from the date of closure/payoff. A bunch [...] ... ( more)

Do you shop when you get depressed or bored? Buy things because you “deserve” them? Pick up little things for your kids or other family members, but feel guilty buying yourself something because you know you “shouldn’t” be spending the money?
If any of those questions ring a bell for you, take a step [...] ... ( more)

This is bad. I’ve got the decorating bug again, but need to wait several months before we can do more work on the house. We’re working on gradually replacing the rest of the windows first (which we’re doing part of this month) but our next big project will be to rip out the shower [...] ... ( more)

If someone gives you a gift, and you DON’T like it, do you make a point of displaying or using the gift when that person comes around? If so, why? I’m really curious.
I ask because I hear people say things along the lines of “Oh my mother in law thinks I collect cows, [...] ... ( more)

Tax liens are a way to try and make money that I began investing in last year. Basically you register at BidMaricopa.com, bid down the interest rate on your chosen lien(s), and win if you are the person who bids the lowest amount. Bids start at 16% interest. The auction [...] ... ( more)

This is the time of year when so many of us think about new beginnings. Not just resolutions and goal-setting, but making small changes that will enhance our lives. One way to do this is to start by figuring out what kinds of things in your life are needlessly complicated, and then look [...] ... ( more)

I logged into my son’s ING account yesterday to create a referral, and thought it was strange that he had no previous ING referrals displaying. (Even though I knew he’d received some.) So then I checked my own account and was greeted with this message:
ING DIRECT is giving you the opportunity to earn even [...] ... ( more)

If you’re like me, you’re always looking for ways to save money on the things that you buy. One of the ways that I do this is through rebates.
I’ll tell you a little secret. I used to have a 2nd work-at-home job processing rebates. I’d get about 800 to 1,000 pieces of [...] ... ( more)

If you’re looking to save money on your cell phone bill by finding a cheaper plan, the My Rate Plan web site might come in handy. It provides a way to compare features and costs across what looks to be at least eight different carriers, based on what you input. I wish I’d [...] ... ( more)

Part of my retirement money is in a Class C mutual fund. It was originally opened as a rollover IRA. When I opened the fund several years ago I didn’t know anything at all about investing. (Except that it was a good idea TO invest.) I still don’t know much about investing, but I’m [...] ... ( more)

I spent much of this past weekend (and several hours each weeknight) doing research for the new business my husband & I are considering starting. I’ve started businesses in the past, so I’m fairly familiar with the process, but this is the first time I’ve put this much work into just coming up with the [...] ... ( more)

So says Larry Winget, in the title of his latest book, and I have to agree with him. (It’s subtitled How to Stop Getting By and Start Getting Ahead.)
I had never heard of Larry Winget before (because I live under a rock and don’t get TV, let alone cable) but he is the star of [...] ... ( more)

Last year was the first time that I really made an effort to have some nice clothes. I’d struggled my entire life with finding clothes that looked nice on me, and had pretty much given up long ago. But then I found a book called Brenda’s Wardrobe Companion: A Guide to Getting Dressed From [...] ... ( more)

If you tried to come to the site earlier today, you noticed that it was completely blank. I still don’t know what the problem was, exactly, but I decided to take this opportunity to upgrade to the latest version of Wordpress. So bear with me while I get through these technical difficulties. ... ( more)

We have the older kind of garage door — the kind that’s just one piece, that opens on springs. Apparently this type of garage door really gives openers a workout. So our garage door opener needs to be adjusted every few years. It’s just an annoyance that we pay for now and then. [...] ... ( more)

I did a little more research on my short list of stocks, and reviewed their dividend history. It turns out that the ones I’d been leaning toward anyway coincidentally also had a nice history of paying decent dividends. So I took the plunge and set up an order for 3 different stocks. (Which will [...] ... ( more)

On wrapping paper and cards, at least! We stopped into Target yesterday because my husband wanted to look at some headphones. (Strangely, I rarely go to Target.) I decided that would be a good time to see if they still had any Christmas wrapping paper left.
Their Christmas stuff was 90% off. I was [...] ... ( more)

We had a fire drill recently at a place I go to, and my reaction surprised me. First, there was no notice that it was a drill, so I thought it might either be real or a malfunction. I wasted valuable seconds wondering if it was just a malfunction, should I really go outside, [...] ... ( more)

I’m about to venture into the world of stock picking. I know, the theory is that it’s “bad” to invest in individual stocks, index funds are the way to go, monkeys have as good a shot at being successful, etc. But it appeals to me anyway, so I’m going to go ahead with a very [...] ... ( more)
