Starting in January of 2007, I began highlighting various mutual funds and provided a brief analysis and review of each. Some of the funds are very well-known, while others are small and go practically unnoticed by the investing community. I don’t claim to be an expert fund selector, and none of these funds are [...] ... ( more)

On January 14th, 2008 Royce reopened a number of funds, including the Royce Micro-Cap Fund (RYOTX). I’ve always been a fan of the Royce family of funds, and I’m thrilled to see this fund opening to new investors once again. This fund is a true micro-cap fund with over 75% of its holdings [...] ... Winter finally has a grip on the Midwest as temperatures begin to drop into the single-digits with wind chills around -20 degrees. Every winter I think about how I’d love to move somewhere warmer, but it just isn’t that easy to do. Anyway, if you haven’t noticed, Jim from Blueprint for Financial Prosperity interviewed [...] ... President Bush and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke today endorsed the idea of an economic stimulus package to boost the flagging economy, as Bush began discussions with congressional leaders on the next steps.
Both parties support tax rebates for individuals, to get cash into consumers’ hands quickly. Democrats would also like to increase funding [...] ... ( more)

I briefly recall hearing about something like this a couple years ago, but I didn’t pay much attention because I didn’t think it would ever come into fruition. Well, I guess I was wrong. The 401k debit card is real, and more companies are beginning to adopt it. As if it wasn’t bad enough [...] ... ( more)

After closing ten years ago in 1997 to new investments, Fidelity reopens the Magellan fund today. If you did any investing in the 1980s or early 1990s, you are probably familiar with this fund. The Magellan fund put the now-famous Peter Lynch on the map as an investing superstar while he ran the fund [...] ... ( more)

I don’t have a lot to say other than I’m so glad it’s Friday. This week has been brutal trying to service clients who are freaking out because of what they hear on the news about the stock market. To further compound the issue, our 4th quarter statements went out with a calculation error [...] ... ( more)

By definition, frugal means:
Economical in use or expenditure; prudently saving or sparing; not wasteful.
In a basic sense, I think most people are frugal to some extent, but clearly there are varying degrees of frugal. Some people will go to great lengths to save as much as possible, while others may only practice frugality on [...] ... ( more)

My job has good and bad periods, and when the markets are up, everyone loves me and I hear nothing but good things. But at the same time, as soon as the markets begin to show some weakness, my phone is ringing constantly with worried investors. While you can occasionally talk some sense into [...] ... ( more)

This comes a few days late as I’ve been just completely swamped. Hopefully this week begins to calm down and I can get back on track. But enough chit-chat, let’s get right to the links.

Without a doubt, the higher prices at the pump can really be felt in more ways than one. It not only directly costs more to fill up your tank, but the overall higher cost of oil and gas trickles down to increase the cost of almost everything we buy. These higher prices can even [...] ... ( more)

2007 has come and gone, and a new year is already upon us. So, what do you have in store for the new year? I’ll leave this as an opportunity to allow readers to chime in with their financial goals or resolutions. For my wife and I, 2008 is the year of increasing [...] ... ( more)

As we close out the year I wanted to take the time to highlight some of the best posts from the past year. According to an Earth-shattering study, teenagers don’t save for retirement. From the CNN article:
Teenagers flipping burgers, stocking shelves or studying for finals don’t think about their retirement.
Sarcasm aside, I don’t think anyone should be too shocked by these findings. Look back to your high school days and whatever part-time job you had. If you [...] ... ( more)

For those of you who celebrate it, Merry Christmas! Hopefully you have some time set aside to spend with your loved ones and can share gifts, good food, and good times. Hopefully your holiday break starts off better than mine. On Saturday that nasty winter storm came through the midwest and we experienced winds of over 70 mph. Some minimal damage to our house, but we lost power for over 24 hours. Since we had no heat, we had to rearrange our travel plans and barge in on relatives a day early.
Even so, I look forward to some ... ( more)

There is no shortage of investment information available, so with that I thought it would be interesting to see where most people go when researching stocks, mutual funds, or ETFs. I have to admit, I am a Morningstar fan when it comes to getting detailed information, but for just getting a quick quote or something I usually just hop over to Yahoo! Finance and punch in the ticker.

If this article at CNN doesn’t illustrate how screwed up people are when it comes to money, I don’t know what does.
