How much does a double cheeseburger, milkshake, and fries cost? While you may only pay a few bucks each time you buy it, eating that meal over and over can end up costing you a lot more than that in the long run.
Health Care Costs Although we don’t think about it on a daily basis, [...] ... ( more)

When people think of lower interest rates the first things that often come to mind are the benefits of lower mortgage payments, better car loan rates, and reduced credit card interest charges. Of course for those that are saving instead of borrowing the rate drops mean earning less money at the bank.
The Fed has cut the federal [...] ... ( more)

With rising fuel prices and a falling stock market, who want to spend money on fertilizer? I recently avoided a lawn care salesman who was convinced he could give me the greenest lawn on the block for $60 an application. Seriously, who cares about green grass other than the people selling fertilizer?
Fertilizer CostsAlthough our yard [...] ... ( more)

Do you hate the hassle of printing out and mailing in your tax return every year? According to the IRS, 80 million people avoided the hassle last year by choosing to e-File their taxes. March 31st was the deadline for submitting our flexible spending account claims for 2007. I mentioned in an earlier post a strategy you might use to spend any extra money in your FSA leftover at the end of the year.
I received some skeptical comments about the idea and someone even pointed out that even though it [...] ... ( more)

I’ve written in the past how I’ve recieved applications from credit card companies for a card that’s branded with my college name and logo. I can only assume that someone in the university finance department is looking for ways to bring in more money and decided to cash in on their alumni database. I’m not [...] ... ( more)

Okay, so those aren’t the best place to manage your money. You really should be giving your attention to the road in your car, to the service in church, and to relaxing when on the beach.
However, if you’re dozing off under a beach umbrella when you suddenly remember you didn’t move any money into your [...] ... ( more)

Do you follow your “gut instinct” when making money decisions? Often times that’s a great policy but in some cases, going against your mental reflex is a smarter move.
College Basketball LessonThis came to mind as I watched the NCAA basketball final last night between Mephis and Kansas. With seconds left in the game, up by [...] ... ( more)

With real wages stagnating or declining, rising health care costs, expensive college tuition, and record-high gas prices many people are feeling their bank account squeezed by rising costs without an associated increase in income.
I’ve heard this referred to as the middle class squeeze and came across an example of it this weekend. One of our neighbors [...] ... ( more)

Rock Chalk Jayhawk! I wrote last month about how setting big goals is the way to become successful. Two of the great teams I mentioned in that article went head to head tonight, the Kansas Jayhawks and the North Carolina Tarheels. After two halves of basketball and two huge momentum swings the Jayhawks came out [...] ... ( more)

I’ll be the first to admit that I tend to put things off until “later”. Upgrading software is one of those things I’m not crazy about. Everything seems to be working just fine, I hate the thought of making more work for myself by upgrading and having to clean up the associated mess [...] ... ( more)

You know things aren’t good financially when you stop measuring which investment has made the most money and you start looking for the ones that have lost the least. A recent article in Forbes called “Is Global Investing Dead” touts the DOw & S&P 500 as having “better” losses than major international indexes:
“The blue chip Dow [...] ... ( more)

As a kid growing up my family traveled to Europe several times in my younger years. I was already interested in money back then, finding the currency changing booths and turning our dollars into English Pounds, German Marks, or French Francs was pretty neat.

The markets are dragging down the economy …. Giant institutions are, to use the technical term, scared to death.

I spent the weekend making money for the oil companies. We drove about 800 miles on the way to and from a family get together. Although we drive a rather fuel efficient Honda we still ended up paying over $100 in gas for the trip.

Did you realize that every March 31st, you’re 25% of the way towards the end of the year? By the end of June you’re half-way through the year.

JKLasser, the company that puts out an annual tax guide, sent me the following information about the rebate checks that will be going out to some people. Several years ago, I filled out my first NCAA tournament bracket. It may be hard to believe but I had never completed one before that so I had no idea what I was doing.

This article on Black Monday caught my eye yesterday. The general idea is that although market losses are bad, they also represent a buying opportunity for long term investors. The article lists the following three things that will help you invest successfully, despite market declines.
