By Paul MichaelNot on my body of course; that would be freakish. And if you’re visualizing it right now, I’m really sorry…especially if you’re eating. No, I’m basically reacting to several incidentover the past few weeks/months/years which have forced me to come to the following conclusion: getting deals seems to be a whole lot easier if you’re easier on the eye.
I’m no oil painting: shaved head; average features; I could certainly lose a few pounds. But I do have an English accent. An ace up my sleeve which has, on occasion, helped me sway a few people here and there. ... ( more)

By Carrie KirbyI didn't make it to a Cold Stone Creamery for my free Mother's Day cone, so my gluttonous ears perked up when I heard that Haagen-Dazs is giving away free scoops tomorrow, May 13. There are limitations, though: Only one flavor is free: the chain's new vanilla honey bee, and the free cones are only given between 4 p.m. and 8p.m. So much for taking advantage of my stay-at-home mom status and getting there at 10 a.m.
Just as well, in my case. I checked the store locator and the closest Haagen-Dazs to me is at O'Hare airport ... ( more)

By Linsey KnerlThis Thursday there will be two nation-wide promotions offering treats to customers of McDonalds and Dunkin’ Donuts. While I’m a fan of chicken and waffles, I’ve never done chicken and coffee. Here’s the skinny on some high-calorie munchies…
McDonalds – These guys have been touting their new Southern Style Chicken products in a big way this past couple of weeks. Offering both a Southern Style Chicken biscuit and a Southern Style Chicken Sandwich, they seem to have all their bases covered. They have also been handing out coupons like mad, putting them in Sunday coupon ... ( more)

By Jabulani LeffallBefore you read on, know that this one of those listen-to-me-now-believe-me-later on posts.
Enter the Sukuk: the interest-free loan, based on Muslim principals and before you laugh, understand this: Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, HSBC, Standard Chartered and others are getting into the Sukuk issuance business in force.
Moreover, while we grunt and grimace at the fact that it took 50 bucks to "fill-er up" or that 40 bucks only got us to three quarters of a tank or in some cases, only half a tank -- the sheer quantity of cash from petrodollars is creating a financial boom in the Middle ... ( more)

By Xin LuA couple weeks ago I received a small sample of Corozonas Tortilla chips. I think I requested it a while ago and I totally forgot about it. They sent me two flavors, one was Baja Bean Dip and the other was Magarita Lime. I was pleasantly surprised because I really enjoyed the chips.
They were quite tasty and had very bold flavors. The Baja Bean Dip flavor was actually quite spicy. The chips also included whole oats so they looked quite interesting. The company claims that their tortilla and potato chips actually reduce ... ( more)

By Philip BrewerWhen I advocate for frugal living, people sometimes ask, "What if everybody lived like that? Wouldn't it hurt the economy?" My natural inclination toward frugal living may color my opinion, but I don't think so. I think mass frugality would be good for the economy.
It's a valid concern, rooted in the way recessions and depressions start. Some recessions are business-led, with businesses cutting back first and consumers following because their paychecks are smaller and they can see that their jobs are at risk. Others are consumer-led, with consumers cutting back first and businesses responding to falling sales with ... ( more)

By Myscha TheriaultIt struck me recently as I was working on something in the kitchen that what I was doing was actually quite eco-friendly. The funny thing was, I made the actual choice as a budget strategy. So I started thinking, were there other areas of my life where I was being “coincidentally green”?
As it turns out, there were several. Here are a few of the areas I came up with after just a few minutes of brainstorming.
Fireplace Matches.

By Philip BrewerI don't know if energy costs will keep rising. Nobody does. Even with recent growth in China, India, and elsewhere, the US still consumes 25% of the oil produced world-wide, so a severe recession in the US could easily cut total demand enough to bring the price down. Recession or not, I think the medium-term trend in energy costs is up. Just in case I'm right, you ought to have plan for that.
I've written before about planning for expensive fuel. I emphasized that you should have a contingency plan either to take money from other budget categories to ... ( more)

By Xin LuYesterday my super cheap ex-boyfriend told me that I would be proud of him. I asked him why and he told me that he will be staying in Washington DC hotels for free for three nights. I asked him how he managed that and he told me about the Best Rate Guarantee from Wyndham hotels.

By Carrie KirbySaturday is the Letter Carriers' annual food drive, when you put bags of food out and your mailman or mail woman will pick them up to share with needy families.
But with rising food prices, who can afford to buy an extra bag of groceries for someone else?
You can. Here are a couple of food deals going on this week that, if combined with coupons, yield about two bags of non-perishable groceries for as little as $3. Even without coupons, you'll spend no more than $10 on food that will really come in handy for those less fortunate.
Both deals ... ( more)

By Xin LuFor my entire life, I have never lived in a place bigger than 1400 square feet. The smallest dwelling I had was a studio less than 400 square feet which I shared with my parents. Because of my experience of living in small homes I think of anything over 2000 square feet as excessive for two to three residents. Today I want to highlight some of the reasons why I prefer smaller abodes.
A small house or apartment has several advantages over giant McMansions. First, it takes a lot less time to clean and maintain so ... ( more)

By Paul MichaelBoth John McCain and Hillary Clinton are proposing a new Gas Tax Holiday that will run during the summer months, bringing “much needed relief” at the pumps. But will it? More than 200 economists, including four Nobel prize-winners, have already signed a letter rejecting the proposal.
The Gas Tax Holiday is yet another way politicians pander to the public, with an idea that on the surface sounds like a money-saver , but after a few seconds of consideration is actually pointless. It’s just a cheap way to buy your vote. It's an illusion.
The federal gas tax is 18.4 ... ( more)

By Julie RainsOnce upon a time (aka when I was a kid), the job of U.S. President was deemed the ultimate career destination. Considering the careers of the current contenders (Senators Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John McCain) has helped me to see that the path to success may not be a straight one. What are the career-building lessons among those who aspire to world leader?
Earn a degree (or two) from an elite college or university
Barack Obama - B.A., Columbia University; J.D., Harvard Law School
Hillary Clinton - B.A., Wellesley College; J.D., Yale Law School
John McCain – B.S., United States Naval Academy

By Linsey KnerlDid Papa John’s go overboard with its T-shirts calling Lebron James a “Crybaby?” Regardless of how you feel about it, this cheap price on pizza might help to make amends. Check out more on this Thursday’s promotion!
The Associated Press recently reported that Papa John’s newest (and unadvertised) pizza promotion was inspired by an apology to Lebron James, who was reportedly insulted by a recent T-shirt made by the popular pizza chain. The shirts, which featured the number 23 (Lebron’s number) and the word “crybaby,” were worn during a game against the Washington Wizards. ... ( more)

By Paul MichaelMusic fans of the world, unite. The very cool Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails (or who basically IS Nine Inch Nails), is letting fans download the entire new album The Slip free at the NIN website. This is one further slap in the face to the RIAA, and a move that will no doubt shake up the archaic music industry even further.
If you're a lover of great rock music (NIN is classified as industrial rock I believe), you can't miss out on this one. Click here to sign up , the download link will be ... ( more)

By Philip BrewerIn the Philippines, they're threatening life sentences for traders hoarding rice. In the United States, grocers need to put limits on rice purchases just to keep their shelves stocked. Philippine traders are now afraid to fill their warehouses, for fear of being called a hoarder. Even ordinary US shoppers are worrying that buying a big bag of rice might make them a hoarder. In this climate, it's worth thinking about what hoarding actually is.
Let me start by saying what it isn't. Stocking your pantry with goods that you're going to use isn't hoarding.
Hoarding is buying goods and storing ... ( more)

By Linsey KnerlA cruise to the Bahamas or a trip to that luxury spa aren’t going to get you ahead financially. However, if you’re looking to sock away a couple hundred bucks or more, some time off from work just might be the way to get you there -- if you do it right.

By Xin LuHere in San Mateo County, many gas stations are starting to sport prices above $4.00 per gallon. The trusty Gas and Shop down the street is still holding on to $3.93 per gallon but it seems inevitable that gas will cross that $4.00 mark. Funnily enough, some of the older gas pumps around the country in rural areas are experiencing a technical issue similar to the Y2K problem. Basically, these pumps were not designed to charge more than $4.00 a gallon.
In this article from the Seattle PI , we find a gas pump owner who ... ( more)

By Kate LutherAs America’s love affair with self-investing continues to grow, so does our fascination with tax-free accounts. Don’t believe me? See for yourself. The next time you’re in a conversation, try working the words “tax free” into your conversation and watch the ears perk up. Admit it. We despise taxes. We loathe them. So much so in fact, that Uncle Sam made not paying those taxes a crime. So the idea that we can legally earn a buck without sharing it with our dear old uncle is well, deliciously criminal.
But as ... ( more)

By Paul MichaelMy recent post about reusing old plastic bottles inspired me to look around at other ways to use, well, garbage. And I found a site that really made me think twice about the contents of my own garbage can.
This Australian site, called the Hunter Waste Education Group , has been enouraging people to make art from garbage since the year 2000. And the results are simply astonishing in some cases, with submissions from adults and schoolchildren alike.
When you visit the site, go straight to the gallery here . The art is collected into submission years and runs the ... ( more)

By Philip BrewerSince 1998, the US Treasury has had a pretty good deal for small savers who were worried about inflation--the Series I Savings Bond. The interest it paid was based on inflation plus an additional return that was set by the Treasury and fixed for the life of the bond. On May 1st the Treasury announced the value of that fixed return for the next six months: Zero.
