All you ever wanted to know about how to shop for groceries.   Photo by Robert Wechsler How much do you spend on groceries? The answer varies depending on where you live, how many people you live with, and what your buying patterns are and can range from a very thrifty $50 a month per head in the most frugal American households to a more typical $150 a month per person or even to a more extravagant $300 and higher a month, per head. You may cringe at thousand dollar grocery bills for your typical family of four but they’re ... (more)

I’ve barely blinked and it’s the end of the year already. I feel like I’m once more cramming to get things done before we step into 2008. Last year, I did a post about some smart year end reminders which we’ve tacked on to our current “to do” list, but since then, I’ve [...] ... (more)

Personal Finance Reads The Simple Dollar covers some techniques to try when faced with a major life or financial decision. Look to both rational and objective approaches as well as to subjective and emotional responses to help you make your decisions. This must be our anthem. I’m publishing this YouTube video which has resonated greatly with me because it tells the story of what I went through in the dot-com era, especially the part about “trading in my twenties for a worthless pile of tech stock” and “suffering through the market crash and losing a giant wad [...] ... There was a time when we didn’t have kids, a time when we never bothered with Christmas lights, decor, trees and so forth. But when you have children and your entire street lights up like noone’s business, then you end up wanting to join the town light parade to some degree so that you’re [...] ... (more)

Be careful where you put your rainy day fund. I didn’t expect to see the day when I’d question where we’ve been keeping our cash. For almost two decades, it’s been sitting in a money market mutual fund (MMF) in an investment institution, growing at a snail’s pace. Well, the last couple of weeks, [...] ... (more)

Giving a mathematical paradigm a behavioral spin: my thoughts on making the first million. We’ve all known how tough it seems to make the first few thousand bucks. It’s not an illusion. It *really* is hard to make the first few thousand. Or even the first few hundred thousand. Until finally the [...] ... (more)

In the personal finance blogosphere, we know him as “the guy who tried to use baking soda to brush his teeth in an effort to save money, but failed the smell test.”   Nice mug I wanted to put in a word for Brett McKay at The Frugal Law Student: as one of my favorite bloggers [...] ... (more)

Now that the season is turning and we’re entering into what most will say is the busiest time of the year, I’m finding myself pretty short on time with a whole lot of work ahead at the home front. For the most part, I’ve been doing some Christmas shopping, playing hostess to some international guests for the holidays and also putting together our annual Christmas display — that would include both the outdoor area and the interior of our home. Plus in the coming month, I’m also handling some extra school-related matters for my kids like applications/registrations (new ... (more)

I’m personally not that big on gifts, but lots of people enjoy giving and receiving stuff from each other during various events throughout the year, so I thought to offer a few thoughts on the subject of reciprocal gifting. The time for giving is coming up and we’ll soon all be finding ourselves wondering about what to get our loved ones. If I can predict what happens, many of us will find ourselves packing the parking lots at the final hour, hoping there’s still something decent that can be found and bought from the department store we’ve decided to head ... This is the type of stuff that wakes up the collector in me. I really enjoyed Tricia’s list and discussion of various piggy banks to get your kids to learn the value of a buck . Manufacturers are getting more and more creative! What more, she found one I found thoroughly amusing: the bank that explodes if you don’t save often enough. These new-fangled banks are much more interactive nowadays and use all kinds of incentives to get you to save, including the fear factor! This gave me the idea of featuring some ... (more)

The good and bad of market timing. Are you prepared to buy and hold forever? Technically speaking, there’s no such thing as “buying and holding” forever because in order to be a responsible steward of your portfolio, you’d have to take it through times of evolution, growth, adjustment and reorientation, all depending on where you [...] ...
