I mentioned recently that I’ve taken up the oboe. It’s quite good fun, but of course, I sound terrible at the moment. That’s a bit of a problem because my lessons take place at the local music college, where the students range from 16 to 25 are planning on making music their career. And I’m [...] ... ( more)

So, I’ve decided to take up the oboe. As you do.
I already play the viola pretty well (or at least I would do if I practised) and I’ve always thought that if I learnt another instrument, it would be the oboe - we don’t mention the awful piano lessons I spent about 3 years taking [...] ... ( more)

Have you heard the term, boomerang kid? It’s what you call people that move out of their parents home (typically to attend college) and then later move back in. Presumably the will move out permanently at some point.
To be honest, I don’t really get it - but I know people that do.
There are two ways [...] ... ( more)

I love to travel. Really love it. This year my plans include the Oktoberfest in Munich (confusingly, it’s in September) and later in the autumn I’m heading out to Egypt for a week, where I’ll spend part of the time floating along the Nile in a felucca.
Anyway, I thought maybe you’re planning your holidays and [...] ... ( more)

As with most people you get to know, there are some things that you probably don’t know about me. Some of those things are unimportant - you probably didn’t already know that I’m a supporter of Liverpool Football Club, or that I have a major snake phobia (to the extent that writing that word makes [...] ... I’ve seen a lot of people writing about the silly things that they did in college, like take out approximately a gazillion pounds worth of student loans, or take out a credit card so they could get a (sadly, uncool)
free t-shirt.
I don’t think students are always that dumb. In particular, I don’t think you were [...] ... ( more)

In case you weren’t reading plonkee money this time last year, here are a few of the best posts from April 2007
atheists should tithe - well, it’s really about why humanists should donate to charity, but I’m sure you get the idea. If you’re interested in atheism and related stuff, you might want to check [...] ... ( more)

Yesterday, when I explained about Dave Ramsey’s debt snowball, I said that the biggest drawback is that you end up paying more by paying off your debts in order from smallest to largest, than you would if you paid them off in order of highest interest to lowest interest.
Now, unlike Dave Ramsey, who is hot [...] ... ( more)

Heard of Dave Ramsey’s debt snowball? No? Well, let me explain it to you.
The idea is that you take all your non-mortgage debts (credit cards, car loans, personal loans, secured loans, etc.,) work out all the balances on them, and the minimum payments. Write them down in order of the smallest balance to the [...] ... ( more)

It should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the property market in the United Kingdom, that it’s not a cheap place to live. In fact, it’s a pretty expensive place overall - the cheapest area of the country (the North) still has an average home price of about £150k (in US$ that would [...] ... ( more)

An emergency fund is the least fun, most boringly sensible thing you can do with your money. Saving up for things is great, because you get things that you want in return. Investing for retirement is great, because you get to be rich in return. Even paying off debt is great, because eventually you’ll be [...] ... ( more)

I know this is a little off topic for a personal finance blog, but it was inspired by a comment that guinness416 left on my gift economy post but seriously folks when you’re dead, get your organs donated if possible. I genuinely can’t think of a single good reason why you shouldn’t.
The thing to do, is to be [...] ... ( more)

Far too frequently I fantasise about winning Who Wants to be a Millionaire? (not the lottery, I understand basic probability). My current thoughts are that with the money I would invest about half of it (maybe pay off the mortgage, the rest probably in index funds). The other half of it, I’d be giving away.
Only about [...] ... ( more)

It’s the stupid things that cost you money in the long run.
Yesterday evening, I left my house keys at work. I’ve done this before, but I normally realise about half way there - it takes me 50 minutes to walk home. This time, I got all the way to the front door before realising. To [...] ... ( more)

A while ago, I said that I would review Robert Kiyosaki’s book Rich Dad, Poor Dad. I’ve been a little snowed under recently, so this book review is coming out later than I’d have liked. Never mind.
It’s difficult to exactly describe this book. It’s subitled What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money - That the Poor and Middle Class [...] ... ( more)

I have a growing feeling of dissatisfaction.
One of the problems is that although I got a substantial 8% payrise after my last review (thanks again folks, I am genuinely pleased with this) I didn’t get a promotion. Not only did I not get a promotion, but two people who I consider my peers were promoted. [...] ... ( more)

When I travel abroad, I nearly always stay in a Youth Hostel. The first reason that I stay there is because they are inexpensive, ranging in price from say $5 to $50 a night, depending on your location, anywhere in the world.

So, I’m not very frugal about clothes, or in fact many other things. I’m a lot more middle of the road - not too wasteful but not saving a great deal either.
At the moment, the frugal thing that I’m most proud of is that I walk everywhere I possibly can rather than taking the bus. [...] ... ( more)

I often feel that as a personal finance blogger, I should be more frugal in my purchasing. Although I don’t throw money away exactly, I’m also not a follower of some of the most basic “being frugal” advice that there is. This is particularly true of clothes.
I usually pay full price for my clothes from [...] ... ( more)

For a while now, I’ve had a trickle of requests for a basic guide to investing in UK Stocks and Shares ISAs. As I want to go through things carefully, I’ve split all the details into several different parts, starting with thinking about yourself and what you want with the money, and moving into what [...] ...
