So, I’m not very frugal about clothes, or in fact many other things. I’m a lot more middle of the road - not too wasteful but not saving a great deal either. At the moment, the frugal thing that I’m most proud of is that I walk everywhere I possibly can rather than taking the bus. [...] ... (more)

If you have more money to put in your ISAs for the 2007-08 financial year, you have until 5th April to do so. The allowed amounts are up to £3000 in a mini cash ISA, up to £4000 in a mini stocks and shares ISA, and up to £7000 in a maxi ISA (basically stocks and [...] ... (more)

I often feel that as a personal finance blogger, I should be more frugal in my purchasing. Although I don’t throw money away exactly, I’m also not a follower of some of the most basic “being frugal” advice that there is. This is particularly true of clothes. I usually pay full price for my clothes from [...] ... (more)

For a while now, I’ve had a trickle of requests for a basic guide to investing in UK Stocks and Shares ISAs. As I want to go through things carefully, I’ve split all the details into several different parts, starting with thinking about yourself and what you want with the money, and moving into what [...] ... I’m sure most of you non-Brits have heard of Paul McCartney. It’s also probably common knowledge that he’s in the process of finalising his divorce from his second wife, Heather Mills. Much has been made here of her claims to a substantial sum of money, and she has eventually been awarded £24 million (plus child support). A conservative estimate [...] ... (more)

So many blogs, so little time. Some great posts I’ve read recently are: making a good first impression @ clever dude.  I think this is supposed to be about going for a job interview, but it’s actually great advice on meeting anyone for the first time in a professional setting - whether that be a new [...] ... About this time last year I invested in a loan to an Azerbaijani minibus driver through kiva.org. Twelve months later, and the loan has been paid in full and it’s time for me to decide what I’m going to do with the cash. I could withdraw it and invest it in something with a monetary [...] ... Quick roundup of some of the best personal finance posts of the last week: from the carnival of personal finance we have college the poor kids way - I don’t especially agree with RacerX’s position, but it sounds like he’s forced to choose between paying for his kids’ college and retiring, which is of course no [...] ... I’ve come back from having my hair cut a lot shorter. It’s amazing how a good haircut can make you look 10lbs lighter and 5 years younger. At £35 it’s not cheap, but it’s so worth it. Anyway, on with the show. A big thank you to all the people who contributed to plonkee money’s success [...] ... (more)

The lovely little house that I bought last year is Edwardian. I discovered after I moved in, that this means that it has high ceilings, and non-standard sized windows. Since I live in a pleasantly crowded inner city suburb, I shouldn’t really go without some kind of window dressing. Now, in most of the rooms I [...] ... (more)

The m-network is currently doing a series highlighting Dave Ramsey’s 7 Baby Steps for getting out of debt and getting your life on the right track financially. Links to the rest of the steps are at the end of this post. For those that don’t know, Dave Ramsey is a US based personal finance guru. [...] ... (more)

Just to let you know, the m-network have a new member, the ever delightful Mrs. Micah. We’re all really pleased that she agreed to join when we invited her - the discussion that the rest of us had about it was mostly trying to get everyone together quickly in case someone else snapped her up. It’s [...] ... (more)

I could have sworn that I’d written a very similar post to this before, but I couldn’t find it. In any case, I get asked quite a few questions about expat finances from British people living overseas (especially the US) and I know that a few readers are expats living in the UK. I thought this information - whose discovery [...] ... Chris emailed me the following question: Can my company insist on my retirement at state retirement age or do I have the right to continue my employment? The answer I’ve found (via the TUC) is that unfortunately, yes, your employer can insist that you retire at state retirement age, but only if the company’s normal retirement age [...] ... (more)

I thought I’d give you a heads up on some things I’ve got planned for plonkee money. First up, I’m joining in the m-network’s series on Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps to Financial Freedom. Of course, Dave Ramsey is basically unheard of in the UK, so if you want to get an idea of what it’s all [...] ... (more)

Here are some more answers to the questions that you asked last week. E.C. said: Ok, weird question of the day, what is “plonkee?” It’s a nickname that I’ve had for a few years. It comes from Only Fools and Horses, where the favourite insult was to describe someone as a plonker meaning idiot. Plonkee was meant as [...] ... (more)

I can’t believe it’s March already, and we’ve had the first of the home nation’s patron saints for the year. Happy Saint David’s Day for yesterday. It’s also Mothering Sunday, so Happy Mother’s Day mum, even though I’m 98% certain that you don’t read plonkee money. Busyness at work has prevented me doing as much reading [...] ... (more)

I had my annual appraisal yesterday, which lots of extremely helpful people gave some great advice for. I planned what I wanted to say, and managed to do so.
