April and the 1nd Quarter of 2008 started off with bang. All three major U.S. Indexes were up well over 3%. My investments were up as well, just not quite as much. My portfolio given the hedges has a better relative performance when the market is down. However, I won’t complain too much about the [...] ... (more)

After reading this article on CNN, I felt sick in my stomach about the current state of American values. As the current mortgage crisis continues to unfold, I’ve become more cynical. I realize where you live is a deeply personal choice, and many people have good and great reasons for living where they do. I myself and am unabashed of urban living, and urban living in larger more expensive cities. The reasons most often cited by people is culture. Personally, I’m [...] ... (more)

I just got an email from HSBC indicating that they were reducing their rate on online savings accounts from 3.55% to 3.05% to better reflect the drop in rates from the Fed. I’m not much of rate chaser, but given how low rates are getting I need to give some thought into making my [...] ... (more)

Apparently having a top notch FICO score doesn’t cut it anymore, according to this article in the Boston Globe. During the housing boom, anyone with a pulse and a FICO score above 620 was rubber stamped for a home loan. 620 being the cutoff between prime and the dreaded subprime. I [...] ... (more)

The Financial Times had an article about a rumored iPod that would “come with” music. This would be a big step for Apple as Steve Jobs has been habitually opposed to the subscription model for music. I’ve personally been opposed to the idea of subscriptions as well. I’ve always thought that [...] ... (more)

The recent of bailout of Bear Stearns have fanned the flames of class warfare. Personally I’ve yet to make up my mind if the bailout is a good thing or a bad thing. I don’t know enough about how Bear was tied up with other firms, and what it’s failure would’ve implied [...] ... (more)

I’ve been thinking about how I need to take more risk, and more risk specifically related with money.  This is not to say I avoid risk.  I don’t.  Many people who know me think I take too much risk, but in truth I don’t. I’m relatively young at 32 and am in [...] ... (more)

I’m sure many of you noticed the nice “blip” up in the Market on Tuesday March 12th, and the subsequent tumble on Friday.  Wall Street reacted with joy and elation to the Fed’s most recent move. The Fed has been trying to pump money into the financial institutions over the last [...] ... (more)

Citibank is no Eddie Money, but they are offering two free airline tickets for opening an account with at least $25,000. I first heard about this at My Money Blog, but didn’t think much of it since I already have a Citibank Account with a full complement of savings accounts. [...] ... (more)

Unlike many Americans, I’m not all that personally concerned with rising crude prices and the inevitable higher gas prices. I’m lucky I don’t commute to work, and probably fill my 14 or so gallon gas tank a little over once a month. At $2 a gallon I spend a bit more than [...] ... (more)

Last week in my February Investment Update I had a chart similar to many a chart found in Mutual Fund advertising. I’ve commented in the past how some personal finance bloggers can across smug. However, given the audience, this smugness is not a big deal. The fact is the writers of personal finance blogs reflect the attitudes of the readers. I’m both a writer and reader, and I can personally attest to the fact that I [...] ... (more)

Yesterday, I received yet another inquiry from a certain wealthy individual seeking help with “a large sum of money”, $28.5 million to be exact. I’m not sure who they think they’re tricking with these emails, but I certainly don’t plan on being one of them. Normally I wouldn’t think too much of the email, but [...] ... (more)

I came across this article on CNN on black police officers in Georgia were only getting percentage of what white police officers who had similar lengths of service. I am an owner shares VMATX which is the Vanguard Massachusetts Tax Exempt Muni Fund. I don’t have it for any sexy reasons. February was not quite the month that January was.  Still all three three major indices (NASDAQ, S&P 500, and Dow Jones Industrial Average) finished lower at the end February than they started.  They still finished above the lows hit in the middle of January, but only slightly so.  My portfolio performance [...] ... I’m not very good about throwing my shoes away.  This partly because I’m cheap, and partly because I find old worn shoes extremely comfortable.  At any given time I usually own 4 pairs of shoes - sneakers, brown shoes, black shoes, and some boots.  However, I almost always [...] ... (more)
