Kiplinger’s brings us the story of Paul Navone. Navone works as a quality-control inspector in a glass-container factory—and has never made more than $11 an hour. But until recently, he was worth about $3 million. I say, “until recently,” because he recently gave $2 million away to two schools. How did he do it? Real estate, frugality, saving, and investing. At age 23, Navone “scraped together” $6,500 to buy a duplex in New Jersey. He lived in one part of the duplex, and he rented out the other part. He ultimately bought four other properties in New Jersey—and ... ( more)

Imagine you were 22 when you started working back in 1978. Do you know how much money you would have if, instead of paying in the maximum Social Security tax over the last 30 years, you were allowed to keep it? It’s probably more than you think. Take a look at the [...] ... ( more)

I usually look for the little things that we can do to reduce our spending - things like installing more energy-efficient light bulbs or preparing a meal at home. Those are nice because they are simple and generally only require one little change to create a benefit for your bottom line.
However, in the excellent [...] ... ( more)

A former co-worker of mine, whom I will name John, recently left our company, suddenly. Actually, we saw it coming. He began using up all of his sick and vacation days; and when it all dried up, no one heard from him again. “No call/no show” is one of the worst reasons to be absent. [...] ... ( more)

Money Magazine is recommending that those wishing to build their net worth over a long period of time simplify matters by putting all their eggs into seven baskets in the form of mutual funds.
1. Fidelity Spartan 500 Index (FSMKX). This fund’s total expense ratio is a minuscule 0.10%. It tracks the S&P 500 [...] ... ( more)

The following is a guest post by Miranda Marquit. A big thanks to Miranda for standing in for me today as I recoup from my extremely busy week!
One of the questions that many people ask themselves in times like these is this: should I pay down debt, or build my savings? This is a tough [...] ... ( more)

I just ran across an interesting article that talks about a lawsuit against Wal-Mart over their 401(k) investment selections. The suit claims that Wal-Mart harmed their employees by offering high-cost retail funds instead of the cheaper institutional funds for which they surely qualify, and by only offering actively-managed (and thus costly) fund options rather than [...] ... We all know that saving money is hard, especially given the way the economy is going. It’s always the same thing. We say we’ll save on the next raise or when the car is paid off, but we never do. Savings has become something that we do when all of our other bills are paid [...] ... ( more)

My wife pointed this out to me last night as she flipped through this week’s Walmart flyer full of deals for the upcoming long weekend.
Now, obviously Walmart is trying to mimic Old Navy’s $5 flag t-shirt idea (a strategy which Old Navy has apparently abandoned) and then undercut them somewhat. Looks like a pretty [...] ... ( more)
